Pilot Custom 74, B Nib

Recommended Posts

If you are the owner of a Pilot Custom 74 with B nib, would you kindly either post a picture of a handwritten line or two so I can see it, or give your opinion about the line thickness? I've looked at the nib comparison info on nibs.com for a frame of reference with pens I already have, searched for reviews with handwriting samples, and I really would just like some pictures and subjective opinions so I can try to stop torturing myself over this pen.

I've been venturing into broader nibs lately, and my handwriting has improved leaps and bounds from the blobs I made at first. But I'm still worried about hitting the upper limit of "B" that I can handle, and am trying to avoid a $160 mistake.

Did you ever get a response to this? If not, I can post something for you. I just found this post while doing a Google search for Custom 74's.

My next pen will have a B nib and I'm currious as well how they act :) I love my C-74 F nib but have been leaning twards fatter nibs lately.

A few pics with my Custom 74 Broad nib. The ink is Diamine Eclipse...

Thanks for reminding me that I hadn't inked this one in a while :) I have to admit this isn't one of my favorite pens. I like it, but don't love it. I find the nib to be rather soft. It's not a nail. Usually I like that, but I seem to get a bit of a woolly line with the Broad nib. I'm trying different inks and papers to find a good combo. The Diamine Eclipse in the sample above is probably the best so far. It's really pretty nice, and I'm taking the inked pen to work with me today. We'll see how it performs on the terrible paper I have to use at work mellow.gif Still, I'm quite happy to have this pen in my collection. As with other Japanese Broad nibs, the line the pen produces is quite close to a 'Western' medium.

Thanks Tamara.

Was specifically thinking the soft B nib might accentuate inks with shading effects?

Unless it's a new offerring, Pilot doesn't make a soft B, only a soft fine, fine-medium, and medium. The extra-fine and bold seem to be left out of the soft nib selection. But, someone else please chime-in if this information is outdated.

I was only reflecting the earlier comment. Knowing how very nail-like some non-Pilot nibs are, I assumed the Pilot B would have at least some springiness. (?)

I had a Pilot Custom 74 with a fine nib and found it to be springy. I only can assume the bold nib is the same way.

Yes, it's springy, soft, whatever you want to call it. It does not flex, but there is give when writing. I haven't really found it to accentuate shading though.

I own a BB nib Custom 74, which I have been yet to find elsewhere (I didn't even know they made BB nibs for these until I bought mine)

For reference, the scribble above it is actually my Custom 74 F nib

Sorry about dropping the ball on this one, Pen2Paper. I lost track of this post. Looks like you got samples though.

Thanks for these posts and samples. I didn't know there were other options for this pen beyond F/M/B - the music nib looks like it would be nice too. I haven't pulled the trigger - yet :D
