Wish I was brave enough to try this with one of mine. Would love a different colour but don't quite know how to tackle a project like this.

Inkypete, despite my happy accidents, the research I did beforehand for how to properly dye the Gfeller Kip pointed towards an easy and straightforward process. I was just not careful at all.

I can say this though. The Fiebing's dye was almost dry to the touch in about 10 minutes ( a little tacky still ) and completely dry within an hour. Amazing stuff.

Here are examples of their dyes, and you can see how different my "tan" Gfeller turned out:

I am going to order one of these lovely covers for my Rhodia Webnotebook; out of interest, how do you all secure your Gfeller/notebook combo so that it doesn't continually fall open? Sounds a strange question I know, but I don't fancy the pen loops as I own an Edison Collier and would need custom pen loops in order to secure.

Kind regards,

If you are getting it for the Rhodia Webbie, they build a slot into the cover that allows you to use the elastic enclosure. It works like a charm!

I have done a little with leather dye I find for best results buy some dye reducer and thin your dye by 50% with the reducer wet your leather with cold water and use either the supplied dauber (in the box with the dye) or a folded up rag. Apply in circles and then in lines to ensure good coverage.

I hope that helps

Visit their site and be sure to view the promotional video, "What's Your Moleskine In?" You will see how the use of the elastic band is assured. Strongly urge you to order two units while you're on the site. Give one as a gift.

full disclosure: I know the proprietors and produced their promo video a few years ago. Steve also makes a cool leather lacing tool. I did the instructional videos for that device. Great folks. INventive. Clever. Conscientious.

What a nice response and referral. Bogiesan is also an Leather artist. I have ordered multiple things and times form his online store. I also have ordered from Gfeller. Each has their own specialty and merits. What a gentleman to compliment another artisan, and never mention his own skills and expertise. Things like this don't often happen in the current on line world. No affiliation with either, just a very satisfied customer of Inkleaf and Gfeller. Jim

  • 2 years later...

Hi everyone,

After a couple of weeks with my incredible Gfeller Kip Seven Seas Writer cover, I decided to take a different route and stained mine. I used Fiebing's Leather Dye in Tan.

It came out much better than expected!

Two important caveats that occurred because I was extremely sloppy and inattentive while applying the Fiebing's:

1) I was so liberal with the amount that I applied in the first coat that the amount of dye I ended up applying probably equaled three coats. This meant that the Fiebing "tan" color came out much richer and darker, almost blackish in spots. And red! Very red.

2) Due to my sloppiness again, I applied the dye in such a wet manner that the mottling that occurred was a completely happy accident.

I was extremely worried that I was going to ruin my beautifully, soft luxurious Kip cover with this staining experiment and if anything, the cover is even more gorgeous and luscious.

Oh my, that is absolutely gorgeous.

I know I'm several years late in finding this, but if you can tell me if you did any prep work prior to applying the Fiebings dye, that would be great. I just got my Gfeller, and while it is a thing of beauty I have to say that I'm just drawn to deeper colors and yours--after being stained--has me completely enthralled!

Thanks in advance!

Hi!

Nope, no prep work. Just way too much caffeine and enthusiasm Best of luck! I love the Gfeller enough that I bought a second one.

You could buy an 8th notebook just to dye it . I think that's where I'm headed !
