Gfeller Notebook Covers

Firstly and honestly ... I'm jealous. Darn nice collection. That said, IMHO, Gfeller and Inkleaf are sort of tied for 1st. Although, for me, Gfeller edges itself into first because of what it does with the inside flaps to eliminate page bump. Also, I recommend you add a Renaissance Art Leather folder to your collection (many to choose from).

I have a Gfeller that has aged nicely, but is not yet as dark as some have shown pictures of. That is NOT because of the leather, but because I typically keep it in my briefcase out of the sun or elements. Just from my handling of it, though, it is already looking amazing. I have considered staining it with tea as others have done, but haven't yet tried it for fear of screwing it up.

Given that I use Moleskines regularly, I also have a Saddleback leather cover, too. It, too, is great, though substantially thicker/bulkier than the Gfeller. I love both of them for their differences. I find I use the Gfeller more frequently because it's easier to fit it in my briefcase with all my other stuff. I'm also considering picking up one from Ink Leaf and one from Oberon. I will post a review once I get them!

I blame you people and your luscious photos of your beautifully-aged Gfeller notebook covers for making me spend $ 79.99 on a Gfeller cover for the Quo Vadis Habana A5. :roflmho: just this morning.

Now I'm really excited about it, and I have to really control myself from emailing Lori all the time to ask "when's it going to ship? when's it going to ship?"

I have Googled the Gfeller, and look what this blogger did to hers to make it more personal.

Yep...did the EXACT same thing...and got it this past Saturday, and LOVE it.

I'm so happy I'll also be able to post photos of my own Gfeller here.

I stained mine with coffee. I just dissolved a heaping teaspoonful of coffee crystals in about 10 ml of boiling water, creating a dark mixture. Then I waited for the water to return to room temperature. Then I applied to mixture to the outside part of the Gfeller with a cotton round, letting each coat dry before I applied another coat. I did this until I used up the entire mixture. Then I waited for the last coat to dry, and hung the Gfeller outside of my window for one whole day.

I did this for two consecutive days.

Here is how it looked after the first day:

And here is how it looks after the second day:

Sitting pretty beside my Lamy Safaris. Notice that the inside of the Gfeller is still in the same original color.

It looks really good now, a medium tobacco color. I love it!

Thank you to all of you who have enticed my to buy my own Gfeller. I am certainly happier with it in my life. :cloud9:

maryannemoll: This is brilliant, and the color is magnificent. I'm definitely doing it to one of mine.

Enjoy!

And oh by the way, I forgot to mention that my Gfeller now also smells awesome, like coffee and real leather. I keep sniffing it! It's a great picker-upper in the morning.

Have fun with your Gfeller project!

:) Happy to report I finally got a Gfeller!! Oh, happy day! :bunny01:

I got the kip leather cover for my Seven Seas notebook. Nanami Paper does a great job with the pics accurately depicting the color and leather weight. I can't stop fondling it or sniffing it. Icing on the cake, the Midori A5 fits beautifully in the cover as well. WHOOP! The inside flaps do make a difference, removing the "hump". I'm afraid the oberon covers with their eye candy, will have to take a distant second to Gfeller's muted elegance.

I'll be getting one for the Tsubame as well and have asked Steve to look at designing something along the lines of the Kokuyo notebook cover.

Gfeller covers are perfect. Quality, functional and durable. I have about 5 now and love them, especially my A4 cover for the Clairefontaine. It's my desk day book and looks great.

I too have fallen victim to the curse. Order placed last week. I actually suspect that the pale leather on the strap of a classic style Louis Vuitton is this same leather, or very close. Those age in amazing ways with regular use and are very soft and strong.

I still love my cover...it's a bit dinged up now, but I think it's gaining character. I can't wait to see what it looks like after five years or so. This is a comparison picture I took at one year:

I put the owl on there to suntan it onto the cover. It's pretty faint, but I can tell what it is, so I'm happy with it. I probably could have left it on there a bit longer!

Hi everyone,

After a couple of weeks with my incredible Gfeller Kip Seven Seas Writer cover, I decided to take a different route and stained mine. I used Fiebing's Leather Dye in Tan.

It came out much better than expected!

Two important caveats that occurred because I was extremely sloppy and inattentive while applying the Fiebing's:

1) I was so liberal with the amount that I applied in the first coat that the amount of dye I ended up applying probably equaled three coats. This meant that the Fiebing "tan" color came out much richer and darker, almost blackish in spots. And red! Very red.

2) Due to my sloppiness again, I applied the dye in such a wet manner that the mottling that occurred was a completely happy accident.

I was extremely worried that I was going to ruin my beautifully, soft luxurious Kip cover with this staining experiment and if anything, the cover is even more gorgeous and luscious.

Yup, gorgeous. Looks like you limited this work to the outside aspect of the cover--did you consider tackling the inside too...?

Yes, I also gave the inside my sloppy, overzealous treatment. Now everything is, intentionally or not, coordinated with my Nakaya Portable.
