Great Surprise

Hello guys,

Today I received a parcel which included two pens that I traded with my Waterman Charlerston, a Parker sonnet fp m gold nib and a ss sonnet rollerball. Well the big surpise were the cartidges that the sender had included, the were Parker Penman Sapphire :o :o :o . I added some water to them because they had dried and I started writing with my new pen. Guess what I LOVE the colour of this ink, I had tried pps ink before 10 yers but I didn't remember it's colour at all. SO now I will try to make the faux pps ink from a recipe I that I found here on FPN. I believe that the sender didn't have any clue about the cartidges he sent me.

Yes I confess, I am still using my Jotter

Great story. Besides the few thousand that kphil75 (from Greece) sold to a bunch of us, there was another 7500 that were recently sold by a Hong Kong seller (Pokydady) discussed in this thread. Maybe your giffts were from these supplies. Enjoy!

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

I am thrilled that the Carts worked out. I have a batch, and like you mentioned, they need a tiny bit of hydration when I get ready to use them. I may have to break out a 45 or Sonnet and fire up some Penman Sapphire to write with this week.

You're soo lucky. Everytime I have a chance to even look at Parker Penman Sapphire, someone takes it before I do. Have fun, don't use it all the once!

Well, the listings are back, so here's your chance!

So much for only having 7,000 of them for sale. Another email for Stella.

I purchased a 20 pack of these, and have so far tried PPS in a couple of pens. I think I may have diluted the ink in one pen too much, and perhaps in the other not enough. I don't really know though, because I never had any PPS when it was still in production. (I've also been told that there were variations in production even from Parker, so there may not even be a "one true PPS."

I noticed that there are a number of inks that are similar to PPS. Private Reserve American Blue, Diamine Majestic Blue, Noodler's Blue, Noodler's Blue Eel, Noodler's Bad Belted Kingfisher, and Noodler's Ottoman Azure all seem to be variations on a theme. You could even add in Diamine Asa Blue and PR Lake Placid Blue if you dilute the PPS a bit more. (I keep an ink journal, and this is what I'm basing my observations on.)

I'm sure that I could pick one of these other inks and like it just as much as PPS.

Maybe there was too much build-up, but I'm just not seeing what the big deal is with PPS. :) I'd rather use something else that is less expensive and still readily available.

Here's Stella's update:

Hi friend,

We are sorry for the confusion.

We Although we listed much of them on ebay, we will end all of them once we sold out all the stock,

The quantity is that much is because we want to have the selling history and we don't want to relist the item every 3 days.

If we keep selling them this much, the stock may sold out within 1 month.

Just to confirm once again, we are not able to get them anymore if the stock was sold out, all we have are the last stock, and all of them are genuined.:)

Best regards,

Stella

In summary, I have no idea how many they REALLY have, or where they got them.

Stuart, it sounds like you didn't get the ones that have the solid gold nuggets inside. Too bad.

I've only opened a couple of the 20 that I received, so I'm still hoping to get that gold. :)

It seems like nice ink, but it really didn't wow me or anything. I've heard so many people praising it, and it was kind of disappointing to finally use some.

Yes, I totaly agree with you. PPS is anice ink but not something "super special". Also if anyone is interested a FPN member has managed to create a recipe of ink which looks just like the "real thing". I will serch my ink journal and post it later.

Last time I looked, "Pokydady" was still selling the Penman Sapphire cartridges, although the price had increased. Go fast and you might find some...

  • 2 weeks later...

As of today, all three listings for the carts are still active. I ordered 150 of them yesterday.

At least from the recent past prices, this is a steal. Only $3-4 more than a "regular" bottle of ink.

I got some too. The price is not bad compared to premium inks like Iroshizuku, and the vibe here on FPN is that this is one premium ink!

While it can be cloggy in some pens, many consider it the Blue all blues are judged against.

Bottles of it are getting harder and harder to find. This week, full bottles sold on The Bay for $63 and $73. (The last bottles I saw here were around $40)

While it's a bit of a pain to transfer 100 carts to bottles (do 50 at a time, keep the others sealed) you end up getting 2 bottles worth for $13 a bottle shipped.

Unless the unlikely occurs and they begin production again, you will never see it this cheap again most likely.

It's selling for a premium price, anyway. :)

That's not accurate. Other than the work you have to do extracting, Poky is selling 100 for $26. Each contains 1.2ml if fully constituted. That's 120 ml of ink for $26, or $13 for a 60ml bottle. Not including shipping, J. Herbin is $9.50 for 30ml. Sailor is $12.50 for 50ml. Waterman $10 for 50ml.

Sure there are cheaper inks such as Noodler's, Sheaffer, PR, etc. but this is for an ink that is prized by many, and has been unavailable for over 12 years--which adds to its value.

Another way to think of the price:

- this Parker Penman Sapphire at $.26 per cartridge

- Aurora Blue currently sells about $.50 per cartridge.

(And PPS really does have a fascinating color: more like two or three different colors, depending on the angle, the lighting, the time of day, and I don't know what else. Both blue and red at the same time, with a glow. Other inks are one color: a beautiful purple/blue, an eye-catching bright blue, a sober dark blue. One color. The almost-PPS inks, like American Blue, have just one element of PPS. )
