Hi,

To take a closer look at the shading potential of DMac, a few more Written Samples are shown below.

Pens with Italic-shaped nibs were chosen:

  • A Pelikan M200, with an over-the-counter Binder 1.0 Stub, hand ground from a Pelikan M200-series g-p steel BB nib.
  • A Pilot Custom 74, with a factory stock #5 three-tine 14K MS nib.
  • A RED Esterbrook J, with a factory stock steel 9284 Signature Stub nib.

NIB-ism:

Paper: HPJ1124.

Left to Right: The Binder 1.0 nib is the wettest; the C74 MS nib is slightly wider and slightly drier than the Binder 1.0; and the 9284 is the most narrow and the driest.

______

To generate shading, smooth coated hard-surface papers are often suggested, so I included Rhodia and Clairefontaine Triomphe.

Written Sample: Rhodia.

Going against the grain for a 'shading' paper, I included the G Lalo, which can be a challenge for some pen+ink combos.

Written Sample: G Lalo.

Comments:

  • On the Rhodia and the CT:
    • Pleasant modest shading was generated from the Binder 1.0 and the C74 MS nibs. (Consistent with expectations.) :happyberet:
    • On those papers, the 9284 also generates shading, but not to the apparent extent of the wider wetter nibs.

  • On the G Lalo:
    • The C74 MS did not give an attractive result, and seemed to be struggling a bit. In good part that is due to my difficulty keeping that nib running on its sweet spot on textured papers - the feedback is very poor.
    • The 9284 came much closer to the sketchy line quality I was hoping to see. That Look typically requires a very light hand, which gave some broken lines: those are not skipping caused by feed problems, baby bottom, etc.
    • Practitioners who prefer a 'juicy wet line' would likely be dismayed at such a result. :o

Hi Sandy, Jeffery, and other FPN mates!

I am not really ecstatic about this ink, but I find it to be a good addition to the Diamine line, it does give two things IMO that makes me prefer Noodler's Walnut to the lovely hue of Chocolate Brown. First, it is not reddish at all, but it also voids being grey, sepia, bluish, or black, it is a very BROWN dark brown. Second, I will hardly use Chocolate Brown for anything but unimportant scribbling, it's water resistance is the flaw for me. But Macassar seems to be a good bit better, without going into the properties of an Iron Gall, or Bulletproof ink.

I don't know that I'll use this ink much, Noodler's is making too many good looking Browns with great water resistance. But I will probably keep a stock of it on hand. I think it fills a niche in Diamine's line, but not really in the whole market, and I am probably biased as a big lover of brown inks. It seems like one that will earn the disfavor of those less inclined to browns.

By the way Jeffery, I got an 80ml bottle of Saddle Brown, and it's very nice, I have been using it in a Swan with a nice flexible nib, and I think it was a good addition to my brown ink hoard.

Gobblecup ~

This review is AMAZING.

I am speechless.....

Thank you so much for that.

Hi,

Quite often I include a comment in regard to the name of an ink. At best this is a sideshow, but names do influence expectations. Especially for inks whose packaging is without swatches, its name may be significant at the point of sale.

Wiki indicates 'macassar' to be a grooming aid for men's hair, likely derived from 'Makassar', a population centre of Indonesia. I have not had the opportunity to visit Makassar, nor do I use men's grooming aids, so what those have to do with this ink remains unclear to me. But if this is men's business, then Dapper Dan might know.

I seek members' kind thoughts as to the ink's name.

Bye,

Sandy1

I have no experience with Macassar oil to compare with the ink name. What I enjoy is that the "Antimacassar" was developed to keep Macassar hair oil from rubbing off men's hair onto the furniture.

I love how looks this brown, I am wondering what would be the closest coloured one for a student, like me (so without the bleed/dry-time problem).

Suggestions ?

Hi,

I have not used a wide array of Brown inks, so my suggestions are limited.

Pilot yama-guri is certainly a contender, though it may be tricky to squeeze into a lean student budget. https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/220115-pilot-iroshizuku-yama-guri/?do=findComment&comment=2326779

R&K Sepia continues to be one of my go-to utility Brown inks. It is really not very Brown at all - it is much more of a Grey-Brown. https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/254819-rohrer-klingner-sepia/

Another to consider would be Kaweco Sepia. Fingers crossed that the bottled ink now available is the same ink that was in cartridges when I did this review: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/233172-kaweco-sepia-earth-brown-cartridges/?do=findComment&comment=2505854

Well, thanks but that's sure that Iroshizuku will not be in my selection.

I find sepia to be too greyish to my taste, kaweco is interesting but 15€ for 30ml, it's too much.

I was just wondering about a great polyvalent brown, but in all the ways it would not be for now.

For an alternative to blue-colour, I already love Miruai from Sailor

Other :

I have a question but about pens :

Considering a cheap pen to underline, I thinked about a Jinhao + Goulet nib combo, but do you know one like the x750, thinner and where the nib can be swapped ?

Thank you.

Hi,

You're welcome!

I found that getting a 'right' combo of properties in a Brown ink is somewhat trickier than most other hues. In part I suspect that as Brown is a menagerie of other hues, and those dyes do not have the same performance profile.

I'm afraid I am not familiar with the Jinhao pens, so cannot answer that question.

You may choose to ask your questions about a suitable Brown ink and the Jinhao pens in other Forums, which have far greater readership then an Ink Review Topic. Then I too can learn from the knowledge and experience of other Members. :)

I received a 30 ml bottle with 3 pens from one of my favorite vintage German eBay pen sellers today. While it's not likely to become a favorite brown (I love brown inks) it's performed quite nicely in the TWSBI Micarta with medium Bock nib that I've used it in so far. Sadly it's not a shader in that pen, but a very nice medium to dark brown that I'm sure to enjoy. At least it's not a Trump, er I mean Noodler's ink. That alone makes it a good ink.
