Waterman Phileas (this may be harder to find <$50 now)

You're telling me. I have not seen a reasonable price for a Phileas on eBay in months.

I second the Al-Star and the Esterbrook J. Both have a large amount of nib choices out there, and they're both fantastic daily carries. I find myself using my Estie more than my Safari (essentially an Al-Star) simply because I no longer like fine nibs. I'll be ordering a replacement from Gouletpens soon, though :)

My best writer, without question, is my Lamy Safari with 1.1mm nib. Smoothest nib I have by far with beautiful line variation to match.

Consider an Esterbrook J or a Parker 45, either are some of the best values for under $50

Product availability, shipping costs, and customs duties will affect final cost. Your actual location is relevant. Where are you ?

Hi,

For those who are very curious why a lot of the pens here are either unavailable or more expensive than they used to be, this thread is seven years old. The pen landscape has changed a lot in the past few years. (This at least partly explains why so many people are surprised their favorites aren't on the list)

I recommend Lamy ABC, Lamy Nexx, Lamy Safari, Lamy Al-Star. They use the same nibs and feeds, and I highly recommend the Lamy A nibs. There is also the Pilot Vortex, Pilot Cocoon, Pilot Prera, and Sailor Lecoule. There is also the the Pelikan Pelikano. The A nibs on the Pelikanos are excellent.

This thread brings back a lot of memories since I read it when it was first created.

I'd love to find a Pelikan M200 for under 80USD let alone 50USD. Please tell me where you are getting these for 50 bucks. As for my pens under fifty... the Picasso's Georges Braque and Ann Griese are awesome writers and of course a Pilot 78G Medium and the Metropolitan in Fine.

Back in 2005, you could get one for about that much. Pam Braun was also still around. As mentioned before, this is a very old thread. Maybe you can build a time machine to take us back there?
