Nibs With Line Variation

nm4

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

When I first got interested in line variation I was craving samples of different nibs. I've noticed many others have been requesting these as well. I was hoping to start a thread where we could post samples of nibs with line variation - it could be a help for those of us looking for new nibs. To that end here's a sampling from my collection. My photography and penmanship aren't the best but hopefully the nibs speak for themselves!

Great idea for a topic.

I would say 90% of my pens exhibit line variation, whether through nib size/shape or flexibility. These are the ones I have inked today, the only pens inked today but not shown are a Kaweco Sport and a Parker 61, neither of which provide line variation.

These are all flexible nibs. I have several Italic nibs but none are shown here.

OK. Here's one that I think is somewhat uncommon, at least it doesn't get talked about much in these threads. Osmiroid Sketch nib on an Esterbrook J. Clearly, I need more practice using it.

This was done with a Shadow nib on an Osimoid and an Italic nib on a Pelikan 110.

Here are a few from the "Random Inks" thread.

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/193844-random-inks/

Bexley Imperial - Stub Nib, adjusted by Greg Minuskin

Pelikan M600 - B Nib, modified to a cursive italic by Pendleton Brown

Aurora 88 - Factory Italic Nib

Pelikan M1000 - Started out as an OB Nib which was then modified by Pendleton Brown to an oblique cursive italic, and then adjusted to a straight cursive italic by yours truly.

Lamy 2000 - OB nib, customized by Pendleton Brown to an oblique cursive italic. This is now more like Richard Binder's "Hebrew/Arabic" nibs. Really cool nib! The wide and thin strokes are reoriented compared to your usual italic.

Pelikan M805 - M nib, made into a stub/cursive italic by Greg Minuskin.

Montblanc 149 - B nib, ground to a cursive italic by Pendleton Brown.

Conway Stewart Churchill - Factory Italic Broad Nib.

Aurora Optima - BB nib that I have sharpened a bit (increasing line variation slightly).
