The Rare Ones

It is a rare pen. Congratulations! Looks like it is in a great condition too.

The # "27 1/2" followed the model # 25 in Spring or Summer 1934 and was followed by the # 124 in Autumn 1934. So the stamp "27 1/2" was only used for a very short time. They all (20, 25, 27 1/2 and 124) have the same size but as up to 1934 the model number also was the retail price, Montblanc had to change the numbers when they increased the price.

Can you make a picture of the nib please? It should have either a "M"(in a circle) nib or a two-tone nib.

My records are not quite clear about the exact dates but I'm pretty sure that I'm not too wrong. ;)

Interesting info, thanks. I actually have a 124 in azurite blue

Thank you for the information, those details are not always explained in the MB books...

I should have added an image of the nib, just did not think about it...

Another nice find! But the R ET N are the ones that have captivated my imagination!

I've had a 22 1/2 and a 17 1/2 before, both in burgundy, but never in black and pearl.

I need to go to more pen shows! Hamburg may be next for me..

See you in Hamburg, it is a great show... and a fabulous city...

This is a Sefty # 1 in gold with a non MB star and a date at the Cap's head = 24/5/1939, I would not call it "rare" but let's say uncommon...

Well, I am not an expert, only a collector...

Your Safety #1 looks ok to me, but there are a couple of questions I can not answer.

I do not see any Silver mark and the barrel overlay seems too long.

I have seen the spiderweb overlay before, more than once, but barrel overlay was shorter and it had no clip.

It does not necessarily means the pen is wrong though...

Many people knows better here and they will stop by soon...

Best

One thing to keep in mind is that many overlays were made and installed by jewelers rather than the manufacturer.

-- Joel -- "I collect expensive and time-consuming hobbies."

INK (noun): A villainous compound of tannogallate of iron, gum-arabic and water,

chiefly used to facilitate the infection of idiocy and promote intellectual crime.

(from The Devil's Dictionary, by Ambrose Bierce)

Yes, especially back in that time period. Very common for a jeweler to put a precious-metal overlay on a plain hard rubber pen. Usually enhances the collector's value, but if pens with overlays from the factory draw a substantial premium over one done by an anonymous jeweler. Also note that Montblanc had a relationship with Sarastro, and sent a large number of their pens to them for overlays to be added on a semi-official basis. Sarastro overlays draw more of a premium than generics, but still not as much as overlays actually done by MB directly.

I read the article about overlays makes perfect sense. Many thanks for the info. I'm still not sure how to class it tho, but most likely not montblanc overlay ? =/.

Is the correct term for this montblanc 45 a chef Daufe ? I attached pics.

Beautiful # 45 Chef D'Oeuvre for the French Market (same meaning as Masterpiece or Meisterstück)

It is true that overlays were not made by the factory and Sarastro was a sort of semi-official jeweler (as Gryff wrote) but with some overlays like the spiderweb MB was specially careful... There is also a rare Toledo around...

Impressive pen that 45, was that (beautiful) colour made for the french market only?

I have a 35 Burgundy Chef D'Oeuvre but I have also seen a Masterpiece so I believe they were done for other markets too. Never seen that color in a Meisterstück though !

Hi

I could never find any proof that there was a connection between Sarastro Industrie and Simplo Montblanc.

I search for all pens and informations made in Pforzheim, e.g. Sarastro, Fend

Do you think MB would let any jeweller put these two signs on one pen simultaneously?
