I've got em - I've been crazy busy with all sorts of stuff though (prints especially) and haven't had but one or two chances to fool with em. The one will be pretty easy - but the other is pretty twisted. It's going to take a fair amount of work - but I'm pretty sure it'll happen. Only wish I had a pen to test them in. :) I'll make due with some rubber hose full of ink though. :P

Time to take them in for scrap and recuperate some cash? (yes, I'm actually condoning the scrapping of a fountain pen nib...)

Nah! They're looking great. I'll snap some pics later on. All that's left on the medium nib is to get the tips aligned just right. I'll probably have time to play with it tonight. When a repair is free it's always worth it -- right?

  • 2 weeks later...

So here are some writing samples.

Don't have a camera handy or I'd take pictures too.

That will come tomorrow night.

The medium nib was a total pain. Lots of work.

The stub only took a few minutes.

Whew.

WOW these are nice nibs!

I'd love to play with some before a garbage disposal gets a hold of them. :P

I think if you could manage to get these repaired to a working condition (the nibs, not the feeds) you deserve the title of nibmeister.

How about pics of the nibs themselves? Straight out of the emergency ward, probably still on crutches...

Thanks!!

Bryant sent the nib units with new collars and feeds to set them in.

I'll take pics tonight and post. I didn't have a camera with me last night.

Wow. I wouldn't have thought those nibs could get back close to the right shape much less writing well.

I think Bryant should have gone for an NEA grant. Something about the mauling of handwriting in modern society. A traveling exhibit at all the pen shows.

Here they are. I just touched up the medium nib a bit more to clean up some tooth. I think it's pretty good now.

Since I don't own a single Visconti ($$$$$) I used a rubber fuel line with a slit cut down the side and pushed the nib unit and converter in the hose so I could hold and test the nib. Worked pretty well actually.

What do you think?

Nice! They're very aligned, therefore functionally perfect. The slits/ tines are convergents, as they should be. :notworthy1:

But how do nibmeisters let it cosmetically perfect? Any kind of polishing?

Wow. I just went back and looked at the "before" pictures and I'm even more impressed. Those are some steady hands that bent that gold back without breaking it.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

Looking at those nibs the reaction is: OUCH.

When you see the actual writing from these nibs the reaction is WOW.

But somehow I have a feeling they won't fetch much on the bay.....

Now to find two able bodys to support these poor nibs.

I was wondering about that too. I'm going to send them back tomorrow so I guess we'll see what Bryant will do with them when he gets them. :)

Not sure that they do.

Thanks for the thread. Mr. Binder said he "burnished gold down" and polished a bit to enhance the aesthetics. I don't know this technique -burnished gold down- means, but, when the nib scars are deep, the aesthetic results are not very good. In this case you really can gain the title "nibmeister". :clap1:
