Re economical,

The cheapest smooth nib I have is a Lamy 1.1mm that I bought for $9 to go on a Safari. So smooth you don't even know that it's there - like writing on ice. You can make it catch, but only by twisting the pen to a ridiculous degree.

Sincerely, beak.

I can't decide because if a pen doesn't have a smooth nib it doesn't stick around here long.

I'd rather spend my money on pens instead of shoes and handbags.

A modern Sheaffer Balance broad nib

A Mottishawed vintage Conway Stewart medium nib

A Sailor 1911 Midi broad nib

And oddly enough, a medium nib on a Parker Frontier I bought on ebay for next to nothing

I have found that despite the smoothness of stock nibs, pens that have been aged(plenty of writing) are always the smoothest. With that, here's mine;

- MontBlanc 144 Classique - Medium (After about 12 years of use)

- Esterbrook 1551 (on a restored LJ)- best FPN classified find ever, and its all steel(i.e. the nib)!

- Sheaffer Agio - Medium (amazingly smooth medium nib, I was nearly in tears when the section broke. I've kept the nib for when I get my Custom Edison/ or Lewis Nox)

- Pelikan Future - Medium (writes like a broad but it will give my MontBlancs a run for their money)

- Lamy Light Grey Safari - Medium (purchased a NOS one of this colour that isn't made anymore, smoothest Lamy nib ever)

- Pilot Namiki VP Fine(1 month use) and Medium(Stock)

I can't think of more at the moment!

So far, I'd say my Lamy 2000 with a broad nib and a Pelikan M215 in a medium. My Waterman Carene in broad is also very smooth as well.

A Lamy Safari 'M' nib, also Lamy 'nexx' 'M' nib , same, but just beating both, only counting the smoothness, is a 1992 Parker Vector 'M' nib. It has always been silky smooth, and a 2011 Vector bought in a sale, isn't anything like as good. The 'M' nib under a x8 loupe, seems to be a slightly wider nib, than the 2011, and that may be the answer. Seems to be a complete lottery, whether we get a decent one, or a poor one.

It's really annoying that the smooth Vector does not have a thicker barrel, or the nib doesn't have any spring in it, it could have been so good. I can't buy them all to find out, so I have put the best nib unit into my choice of colour barrel, (maroon) and it will do as a good back up.

For consistantly good, smooth nibs, my two Safari's an one nexx are really very good, and do seem to get better with use. I must admit though, I have never written with many of the pricey pens I read about on this site. It will remain a mystery !

I have a Sheaffer Snorkel desk pen with a Triumph nib that is wicked smooth.

I gotta say, though, the M nibs on both of my Waterman Philieas' were the smoothest out of the box that I've ever used!

All of my MB 149 are smooth writers. After being adjusted at a pen clinic, my MB 146 became a smooth writer as well.

My TWSBI 540 F (EF is not as smooth as F) and Al Star / Safari (EF or F) glide over the paper. I also like my Aurora Demo M (and other Auroras I have in my pen stable) which has a slight tooth to the nib to give me just the right amount of feedback.

My collection: 149 EF/F/B/OBB, Collodi B/Twain F/Mann F, 146 M, Silver Barley F, M1000/M800 B'o'B/M800 Tortoise/Sahara/415 BT/215/205 Blue Demo, Optima Demo Red M/88 EF & Italic/Europa, Emotica, 2K/Safaris/Al-Stars/Vista, Edson DB/Carene BS, Pilot 845/823/742/743/Silvern/M90/Makies, Sailor Profit Realo M/KOP Makies/Profit Makies/Profit 21 Naginata MF&M/KOP/KOP Mosaiques/Sterling Silvers,Platinum #3776 Celluloids/Izumos/Wood pens/Sterling Silvers,YoL Grand Victorian, and more (I lost counting)

Ironically, out of all my pens, my Hero Jumbo 616 (dedicated to BSB) has the smoothest nib. Even better than a couple of P51s and P21s I own. I am convinced certain pen/nib and ink combinations somehow work perfectly together. That particular Hero 616 is not nearly as smooth with other Noodler inks that I've tried.

I usually use a fine point nib, so a smooth nib is sometimes hard to find. By far the smoothest is the Pelikan 1000. Perhaps the second smoothest is the MB Alexander Dumas.

Sailor 1911 M - Writes like an F. Significantly smoother than my 146, but it's not getting as much use.
