either OM or OB, they are both excellent

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I have an old 146 with 14C OB nib from 1955. You can see loads of writing samples in the Fun with Handwriting Practice thread.

I like the line variation it affords, but am not familiar enough with MB nibs to tell if this is due to it being a Broad nib, an Oblique nib or if it really is the combination of Oblique and Broad. Or maybe just its age, or my unsteady, heavy hand

Also, be sure to check the Montblanc Nib Sizes thread to get an idea of what the various nibs can do. Note that MB nibs can vary a bit, so if you have the chance to try before you buy, I'd take that opportunity.

I guess it all depends on what do you want to get from the oblique nib... If it is your first oblique, I would definitely try it out beforehand. If you can't try an oblique 146, try buying a cheap pen with an oblique nib so you can try it out (e.g. Lamy Safaris are quite inexpensive and can have an OM or OB nib). Don't forget that the oblique is really about handling the pen in a different way, if you just want the line variation, try the montblanc B nib, and/or try to get a nibmeister to do a proper italic out of it. Hope it helps!

Which pen you get will also make a difference. My OBB Boheme writes very differently from my OBB 146 because of the difference in nib sizes.

Beware the purists on this site. The minute someone says "oblique" they come running with personal views about twisted grips, how to hold or rotate pens, and what the nibs did and didn't do for them. Try them for yourself.

I use both regular and oblique nibs regularly and both have a great deal to offer if you like them. If you don't, there is a good resale market on this board for oblique nibs. I have both the OB and OBB nibs in addition to B and BB. I'd recommend a variant of your usual nib size and read past reviews if you're not where you can try before you buy.

Any advice for me?

Try it first. Some people are just not comfortable writing with oblique nibs, so they're not for everyone. But once you get the hang of it, they are fun. Especially the stubbish ones.

What's a KBBB nib? (Particularly the 'K' part of it.)

You should go to your nearest MB boutique and use their 146 test kit. I was very excited about getting OM nib pen until I tried it at and found that I liked OB much more. You won't know until you try it.

The K or Kugel nib is a ballpoint nib with some flexibility. Have a look at this link for more info Kugel nibs - the KBBB does not really look like a Kugel nib from my understanding but happy to be convinced otherwise.

thanks

Truth be told, I am a bit skeptic myself on that KBBB-- but, how can you, I, or we verify whether MB did or did not produce them? Without documentation, anything is possible-- like the way Pelikan had all sorts of markings and color that weren't documented.

Ah, that doesn't bother me~~

What I rather know is: where can I find this juicy [undocumented; unverifiable] KBBB nib?

I have modern OB and vintage OB and OM. ALL are wonderful.

My daily writer is a 149 OB bought from our own shrinknib.

Juicy, wet writer but not so much that it is unfriendly to office paper.

My newest is a vintage OM on a 50s 146 and it is incredible.

You mean I can't tell the story about how, armed only with a BBBLOB, I held off a pack of wild dogs?

The liberty of the press is indeed essential to the nature of a free state; but this consists in laying no previous restraints upon publications, and not in freedom from censure for criminal matter when published. Every freeman has an undoubted right to lay what sentiments he pleases before the public; to forbid this, is to destroy the freedom of the press; but if he publishes what is improper, mischievous or illegal, he must take the consequence of his own temerity. No, because the usual suspect will then insist it was a vintage semi-flexy and that modern obliques are no darned good and the board will implode again. :bunny01:

Georges, I wish they were mine, but they are not.

I linked these from a fountain pen collector/repairer blog in Japan. These were pens that he took apart and restored. See the link on the bottom of the post where I posted the first group of pictures.
