Bexley Corona

Curses! Just when I had convinced myself that my collection was done growing for the year. :puddle:

Thanks for a great review. Congrats on a beautiful pen.

By the way, how does this pen post? I noticed you mentioned that you don't need to post. Does this mean that you choose not to due to the size of the pen or that it does not post well?

Thanks,

Keith

Thanks for the review, nm4. Richard's CI nib is really fun, isn't it? I have a couple of his italic nibs and I love writing with them, and the product on paper.

I just commented in tonybelding's Corona thread that I have two of Bexley's Prometheus pens. Their piston mechanisms have performed flawlessly for several years and are causing me to have very high expectations for the Corona piston.

You have commented, along with several others, that the Corona nib is large. Can we collectively figure out how large? I think all my Bexley FP's have #6 nibs, with the exception of the Prometheus, which has a #7 or #8. I like the #6 nibs. They are what I consider "full sized" and they are very comfortable for me. I like the Prometheus nibs even more. They come closer to a Pelikan M-1000 or MB 149 in size, and with all three of these nibs I get the feeling that I am painting brushstrokes rather than writing. So, is the Corona nib a #6, or is it indeed larger?

In all honesty, I am deciding between a Corona or a Bexley 58. Although the 58 is a c/c filler, it is made to be used as an eye dropper filler, too. If I do go with a Corona, I will probably choose the Summer Storm color, too. I will definitely go with an italic nib in either case.

Nice pen. I like the nice long section that is upturned at the front. The price point is good too with a no nonsense presentation.

Thanks for the positive comments guys.

I'll try to answer a few questions.

The nib is a #6 - it's a little smaller than an MB149 nib...but to me it still feels like I'm painting on the page (perhaps because the pen is long?).

The pen posts quite well - the cap does post on the piston knob so that might be an issue for some. The pen is definitely long enough that it's very comfortable without posting - and thus, to my hand, a little cumbersome when posted.

As for the piston, I recall reading a post by Richard on FPN which stated that the filler mechanism had some brass parts - I'm not sure exactly which parts are brass.

As for the section is just feels perfect. The little flare at its end makes it very comfortable.

All in all I have to again praise Richard Binder. It was his glowing evaluation of this pen and its piston mechanism that finally made me buy it...and it's his CI nib that makes the pen an absolute pleasure. Let's face it: if it didn't write well all the rest would be for naught!

Cheers,

NM

This color actually spoke to me more than the orange. Thanks for the review nm4. Mine is due to be shipped out on the 10th - a steel nib also (F) being ground down to an EF. With a steel nib, as they say, what a deal!

okay - since the color thing has come up again - I'll speak. the orange color makes me sick to my stomach. even the old big reds are just awful in my opinion. in jade or black or whatever - awesome - but not that funky orangey red. not for me.

phew!

glad I got that off my back.

Jaymac - you are going to love this pen.

Lovemy51 - I'm glad you like the orange. I like it as well but it's a little too conspicuous for me! Part of me wishes they made this pen in a deep black with gold trim (a la Pelikan Souveran). A demo would be sweet!

Cheers,

The Delta is like orange marmalade (hope that is spelled right). The Bexley is more like an extension cord for my weed-eater. I guess I agree with Mr. _Art.

Whoa, whoa, WHOA!!! What is THAT??? It looks like the nib/section from a Sheaffer Targa stuck in an orange piece of candy? What pen is this?

It's a Legacy section. Very cool. I still don't like the color. :P Although the very first Bexley up there is pretty cool, but it's a different shade of orange.

I guess this repsponse is not too far OT since the pen is made by Bexley.

It is called the Torpedo Mk1 LE. As watch_art said, it is a Sheaffer Legacy section with a custom barrel/cap by Bexley. It is not an official collaboration between Sheaffer and Bexley, rather a privately commissioned edition to celebrate the introduction of the inlaid nib. The pens are LE, but they are not numbered.

I have one in mandarin yellow with a stub nib. If you like the way the Legacy writes, you will surely like this pen. The barrel is a tad shorter than the Legacy's, but still long enough to use unposted. The diameter is almost identical to the Legacy's, so it is a nice chunky pen. You might want to check speerbob's fleaBay store to see if he has any left. (No affiliation, etc.)

By the way, I love mine.

That is really odd - in the photo the body of the pen looks so short that it looks like a modern-day Tuckaway, or something similar to a Passaporto. Interesting, but I'll pass. Certainly not in orange! :)

I have the Corona with a fine nib, now I'd like a second, CI nib grind, as you spoke to in your message. I thought, however, that the Corona nibs were different from the standard Bexley nibs that Richard has on his site. Also, is this CI 0.7 nib grind work well for this large pen?

Any other samples of other grinds available from you nice folks out there?

Thanks

I'm annoyed by the money poured into making an Aurora box.

Heh. . . I was just thinking something similar about OMAS. Not to mention the space it takes to store them.

I don't see a thing wrong with the Bexley box.

They are a bit too nice. Why do we need to store them (although we do)?

Concise and valid points gentlemen :happyberet:

Some pens are too nice to place anywhere but their box. My 1911 hasn't budged from its bijou hut since I bought it :roflmho:

Corona and its box look made for a lifetime of writing and storage together.

Januaryman,

The Corona piston fillers do seem to have different nibs (check out Richard Binder's site for more details). I feel the 0.7mm CI is just perfect for this pen - a lot of line variation, a nice smooth feel, and the ability to write in small print (quite legibly at that!).

Cheers,

NM
