Blotter?

futurebird

Recommended Posts

Ok. Someone please tell this newbie where to find a rocking blotter. I was signing some birthday cards this morning and found that I needed one as the ink never did get absorbed. Thanks in advance.

I bought mine from eBay. It's just like the one from J. Herbin. You can get one from gouletpens.com.

Thanks so much USMCMom. I should have asked this question yesterday when I made an ink order from the Goulets. Oh well, just some more shipping charges.

Dave

Thankful for being blessed with a genteel life and wonderful wife

Tennesse Dave, call or email to see if your order has gone out yet. They are very accommodating about adding to an order.

Dragon, I haven't seen blotting paper in the 19" X 24" size or larger, to line the writing surface of my office desk -pad.

I believe jbb was selling some small, card -tyle blotters.

I have those, (antique & current), & some smaller strips to line my rocker, but.... no large sheets.

And since my previous post, I noticed that jbb doesn't ship outside the US anyway. Perhaps an art supply store would have large sheets of paper that isn't intended as blotter paper but would work as such?

Now, that is a real shame (but may have to do with our draconian taxes when the goods go through customs....I've never actually paid customs dues, ever,... ,just taxes).

jbb must have had some flack from customers re shipping to Canada.

SO MUCH FOR FREE TRADE,EH? There are some fly-fishing suppliers, who I've dealt with for years, have gone this way. Shipping to the lower 49 only!

A B..... Shame!

If you want a Canadian source try Opus Framing. There is a good American source in Talas. In ordering from Talas just make sure your order is less than $100 and you ship USPS only. Then you should not get a customs charge. If you do Canada post is much cheaper than UPS or FEDEX, both of which are cross border scams for residential shipping. You can trust me on this I order from Talas at least once a year and I live in Saskatchewan.

Thanks Rick!

Both links go to Talas & I think I see the paper (though not the colour). I'll call them about payment & shipping.

You are absolutely right about using USPS to Canada (my experience as well). This way I get dinged maybe only 10% of the time if the shipper's declaration is filled in correctly.

My only problem may be that I am very low-tech & conservative, when it comes to shopping & do not shop on-line. But, I'll give a designated Visa card #, with a low limit, to a trusted firm & ask them to delete the #, after the transaction. Beyond that, cheques (written only with fountain pens), or a Bank Draft.

A Dinosaur, yet still alive.

International shipping is a pain no matter the countries involved. I can certainly sympathize with sellers who don't want to bother with the aggravation. Actually, shipping US to Canada (or vice versa) is less painful than most. Perhaps shipping within the EU is easier, but I have no experience with that.

When buying stuff from the US I usually prefere shipping by USPS. If, for whatever reason, you have stuff shipped from another country to Canada by UPS or FedEx, use the cheapest express (next day air) service level. If you do the courier will broker the shipment free or cheap (about $5 if I recall correctly). Brokerage fees on ground shipments are brutal, so it usually ends up cheaper to ship express!

Bookman, what small town stationary?

Around here, if I go into the only (possibly described as a stationary?),.....Staples & ask about a blotter, their eyes glaze over.

PS: Love that green on the desk-pad (a throw-back to the 70-s)!

Thanks. I like the throw-back look of green. And this particular blotter sheet had gotten quite a bit of direct sunlight over the years, so it looks vintage too. For all I know, it had been on the store shelf for twenty years.

Love the green on black, very cool.

I am wondering about other things that can be used for blotter paper. I found that the card stock that they print our water bills on is perfect. And it's flexible enough to be able to lay it down with out smudging the ink.

Does anyone know if the stock they use for matting pictures would work? It has a raw finish and I think I could pick up a few scrapes that would have been discarded. Might be convenient for use at work since I do not take my blotter to work.

I'll give a plug to Williams Stationery in Grass Valley, California. I drive up there every couple of months and buy something. I want it and Walker's Office Supply down the street and around the corner to stay in business. There are no independent office supply stores (except furniture and office equipment) and no independent stationery stores in the Sacramento area. The closest ones are in Grass Valley, in the Sierra Nevada foothills, about a seventy-five-minute drive from downtown Sacramento, which miraculously has one of each. The next closest old-fashioned office supply is in Napa, about an hour and a half away. At least it was still there the last time I looked.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

Actually, this is not true. UPS and FEDEX are possibly cheaper for the insanely expensive options, save maybe an 8:00am next day delivery. The standard policy is to charge the recipient with a fee for filling out the border paperwork, regardless of what the shipper put. (I think UPS botched one of my forms.) They then charge you a fee for paying the custom. They charge you the custom. And then they charge you for needing to pay at the door when it is delivered. (This last one is really insult to injury when you think about it.) Three charges on top of the custom. Canadapost charges $5 + customs. I understand that the border is a hassle and so there is a charge but the way these charges are done is insane and Canadapost is quite reasonable.
