To clarify: The transition variant - knurled but with studs, was exclusive to Levenger. Albeit it was produced in Germany it was only sold in the states because levenger wanted a more secure mechanism for holding the cap in place.

The second version with plain grip and holding studs was produced after Stanford bought Rotring because it was much cheaper to manufacture and they didn't want to produce different versions for different countries.

One quick way to tell the difference between the levenger variant and regular models is to look at the end, the regular Rotrings have a longer end and the cap won't wobble. The levenger one is too short and the cap will wobble, but doesn't fall off. I think of it as a weeble (Weebles wobble but they don't fall down).

You can get a pretty good idea what they are selling for on E-Bay, I have two regular ones and one Levenger one that I paid about $50 for in the mid 1990's I see them listing at prices starting at $199.00 now. I haven't priced the Newtons.
