Useful & Essential Tools for servicing MB Pens.

Nib Feeder Removal Block, Washers from Fountainble, Nib smoothing abrasive papers of various grades, Piano wire to clean the vent, sealants, Brass Nib Floss.

Close up view of the nib feeder removal block and special adapter washers from Francis Goosen who is known as Fountainble on this FTP forum.

This special adapter wahser is fantastic. Only the feeder unit will drop out of the block with controlled manner and the nib is still retained in the adapter ring so that delicate tip of the nib will not be damaged. Otherwise, the whole nib and feeder will drop out even though you put the cotton wool at the bottom to catch the nib. With this collar, you do not need to worry about the nib.( I have updated this paragraph today 10/7/2011)

Nib Vice Unit is essential. I got this unit from late Arthur Twydle who was the famous British pen guru.

I have updated this picture today 10/7/2011. The nib/feeder is in the gap between the rubber block.I prefer horizontal on the sofa to cushion the effect of tapping. you can fix permanently on the table with 2 screws and do the fitting vertically. I tried both ways and I prefer like this. Gentle and more controllable position for me. The nib & housing unit is slightly tilt in the photo shoot. My son was acting it for me. It should be 90 degree vertical upright.

Special Nib Plier from Parker Factory USA. It has a special rubber padded recess where the nib and the feeder sit when you squeeze the plier, it protects the plastic feeder fins from being squashed. A very handy tool to have one.

Master Brand Special Polish Kit from Australia is essential and it is available from Mark user name "mlr8"on this FTP Forum.

I practice on these MB 149 & 146 pens for nib removal and to reassemble the whole unit.

Don't mix any of that kit up with your hospital stuff Doc... Some poor inebriate in A&E could end up with his nib plied - could be a whole new meaning to 'piston broke'.

Francis does make excellent equipment and nice of you to show us - thanks!

I like your sense of humor Stephen. I have a good laugh.

Hi, I will take some pictures of it and post it tomorrow. Mid night in England now. My wife is sleeping and I could not disturb her.

2 special rubber cushion blocks hold the nib and the tip of the feeder, you can actually see them in the photo. Then you tap the housing unit with the brass hammer. I use a drop of washing up liquid to lubricate the outer surface of the nib. The whole nib and feeder will slide in the housing unit without any force and no need to heat the housing unit. Then soak the assembled unit in the water overnight so that no more soap is left inside the feeder.

This vice unit is essential for refitting the unit. Without this device, it is not possible to fit it correctly and to get the perfect alignment.

I am glad that you are interested.in this topic.

Cheers.

How does one go about buying tools from Francis? What tools does he have available? I'd be interested in a nib removal tool for a MB146/149.

Thank you Htin, for yet another inspiring post. After reading your post, I have now set about ordering the tools in your pictures. I have already ordered the resin cleaning kit.

Thank you for sharing, as always.

My dear friend Pavoni,

Fantastic news. I am very glad that you are also interested in servicing or looking after your own MB pens. We have many things in common. Manchester is always in my heart for my Senior Registrar training years at MRI, Wythenshaw, North Manchester General and Royal Oldham hospital. I like Treford Centre. Plenty of pen shops in Manchester.

Shall we meet up one weekend with our families!

Cheers.
