Pocket Briefcase Alternatives

Hey everyone, occasional lurker here. I've got a question for you. For the last few years I've been using a 3x5 card holder that is very similar in design to the Levenger Shirt Pocket Briefcase. Mine was a much cheaper option from Buxton. Quite frankly it has redefined my concept of preparedness. It's been basically an EDC item ever since it was given to me. Just yesterday I managed to get past the break-in period and into the broken period and I am looking to purchase a replacement. I really don't have a lot of money, so I am looking for basically the cheapest possible replacement. Do any of you know of a place where I can pick something up like that online and inexpensive?

Thanks in advance!

I have got a variety of these things stuffed in every purse, briefcase and knitting bag I own. My favorite is from DayTimer, but they don't seem to make them anymore and they weren't much cheaper then Levenger anyway.

That said, a nice selection of these things is available at Amazon, from $10 up, depending on whether you want a nice Italian leather one or a plastic one. Look at this one.

Someone on the forum had introduced me to this index card case from Office Depot. I have used it for over a year and love having it handy for quick notes or lists that I need to jot down. It is pretty inexpensive and is made of eel skin.

Check Leather Unlimited. They used to carry such a holder for very little. Haven't been there recently so not sure but worth a look.

I have a Franklin Covey model 755235, Leather index card holder. $11.99

It has an internal sleeve to keep your fountain pen protected, credit card slots, holds 3 x 5 cards and has the satin lined pocket for 5 x7 items and several places to hide your money. I use it almost every day.

+1 on this product. I bought one of the rubber ones and I think it is even cheaper. They have quite a few colors as well. If you are looking for an inexpensive replacement this is the way to go.

Wow! Thanks for some of this info. Definitely some good links there. Strange that I couldn't find some of those same things when I was searching. That Office Depot one looks interesting, I'll have to think whether I like the pocket in that direction. Can't argue with the price, that's for certain. Plus its nice to see some that are basically the same as I was using on Amazon.

This is the cheapest from Smythson: Jotter

Although I'm not sure if £85 is to be called cheap. Bot that's another question.

I just went to Office Depot and picked up one of the Oxford Note Card Cases. The picture on the web site is deceptive. Like you, I wasn't sure if I wanted one that had the pocket in that direction. However, when I actually saw it, it turns out that is only one of three pockets. There is a "middle" pocket for storage of cards and then on the reverse side it has the dual "bands" that you would slide each end of the card into and have the surface available for writing on without removing the card (think the typical Levenger jotters). I only picked up one, but should have grabbed a few. They were actually selling for $4.99 at my OD, even though the in-store pick-up price showed as $6.65. I am on the road, so I don't have a way to upload pictures, otherwise I would post some.

Well, thanks to a very generous FPN-er I now have a brand new Buxton note jotter/pocket briefcase/whatchamacallit. Not only that, but when time runs its course and once again I find myself in this situation, I know some excellent places to look for them once again. Thanks everyone who helped me out!

As a side note, I have a friend who works for a high end leather goods company who I have convinced to propose something like this as a new product. Who knows if anything will come to fruition, but if it does, I'll be sure to share with all of you here.

There is always the "hipster PDA", which is what I use in a shirt pocket.

Congrats on the Buxton. I have searched high and low trying to find one in the last several months and haven't found a source, so you have done well!

I picked up one of these yesterday at a local Office Depot for USD $4.99. Very stylish, functional, and practical.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
