I've been experimenting with a Coolpix S4300 for the past few weeks. I carry it with me in my bag, as I explore Montreal. Use it like to take photographic "notes" of things that catch my eye when I don't have my dslr -- in some cases, for documentation purposes, to mark places where I might want to go back with my D90, with the appropriate lens, at some particular hour of the day, or another season...

Here are a few samples: images of Montreal!

1. Taken yesterday, end of daylight. Notice the Spearmint gum advertisement, almost completely washed up, and partly covered by a window that may have been pierced through the wall later. Many layers of history here. In the Quartier des spectacles area, where many of Montreal's festivals are held throughout the summer.

2. A house, sandwiched in between two others, in the Plateau neighbourhood.

3. Stairs. Very typical of the city architecture.

Great shot Jon! The color of the water is amazing!

I've ordered a new lens for my camera, a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro. It's a full frame lens, so it will be a 105-450mm equivalent on my Pentax *ist DL2, which has an APS-c sized sensor. Its macro function allows it to have a minimal focus distance of 95cm. Best part is that I've only paid 222,39$ for it, shipping and custom duties included. :)

I should get it in 2 to 6 days. I can't wait to try it and post some shots here!

Love the caddies!

Ticoun, glad you liked the beach shot. I look forward to seeing some stuff from the new lens!

This is not a pretty picture, but I thought it was interesting. We were walking down the street in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, and saw this mother sloth trying to cross the street, with her baby hanging on underneath. I guess she had fallen out of her tree. She raced across in about four minutes flat... Poor thing finally made it across, and then had to go through a barbed-wire fence. Finally made it though. Only time I've ever seen one out of a tree.

Great story!

I already have posted two shots taken with my new lens on the nature photography thread. It's been raining all week long, so I couldn't try it more than that, but hopefully tomorrow will be sunny enough to start shooting again! :)

Took a walk through the Manuel Antonio park on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica yesterday. We watched lots of monkeys, but this was the best. He jumped out of a tree, ran to where someone had left their bag lunch unattended, grabbed it, and got back up the tree in the space of about four seconds. After opening the bag and discarding it, he was left with the sandwich, but seemed to be puzzled by the plastic wrap...

Nice picture, Jar, but I imagine that the fruit was ruined...

I've been working with my macro, and liked this one, though I wish the DOF wasn't so narrow:

Great shots Jon! Maybe increasing your ƒ number would help with the DOF.

Here's a shot I took of the moon with my new lens and a Vivitar 2x teleconverter. That combo on an APS-c camera is comparable to a 900mm lens! Shot handheld, focused and exposed manually because my teleconverter is all manual.

I just wish we could see the moon. It seems to have been cloudy here for the last two weeks.

I did try one night but didn't realise the camera had set ISO to 1600 hence quite a lot of noise.

I could also say I exposed it for the moon dawn area but in truth it's just over exposed.

Yeah, I was trying to keep my iso speed at an acceptable level, and there wasn't a lot of light to start with... I was also using an extension tube on the first one, which makes the DOF even narrower. Oh, well, I may get a chance in a sunny area...

edited to add-Nice moon!
