The Castillian mesa reminded me of Oklahoma, with the exception of scattered wheat and sunflower fields; a land as old as time that has seen so many warriors, traders, mules, horses, flocks of sheep and humanity itself trot along its barren soil. I love this land...

Still loving the Spain pics, Sonia!

Replicas of two of Columbus' ships, the Niña and the Pinta, are in Little Rock for a couple of days. The Pinta is a bit larger than the original, but the Niña is 1:1. Made a trip with the family yesterday, and here are a few pictures...

<Watch out, people. He's trying black & white again!>

Very nice pics Jon! I know the kids (and daddy???) loved the tour! Jon, I know you said you didn't have much time to join those post 1/award 300 groups...but one thing I'll tell you: you learn a lot by watching what are they posting out there and how is the public's response to your art.

Sonia, your photos are always amazing! I love what you achieve in your black and white photos! The effect really is dramatic.

Jon, I would love to see the reproductions of Columbus' three ships. What a terrific experience to bring history alive. If the ships came to Louisville via the Ohio River, I would have to take my school children on a field trip to see them.

I especially like the photo of the ropes.

Thank you both for sharing your photographs. I love this thread.

Near the Stone Jetty at Morecambe, Lancashire. There are dozens of scupture in both stone and metal all around the area.

Here's just one.

Ignoring the green 'live' pixel in the dark cloud, the pics are pretty good. Which camera did you get?

This thread is becoming really really interesting with awesome shots...

I guess I'll have to stop being lazy and contribute a bit as well...

Nice shots!

And, not all of us have DSLRs. I've got a Nikon Coolpix P100.

Thanks. It`s a Canon Ixus 220 (Elph 300 in the US).

Foxtail, I know what you have there, I remember seeing some of your photos around here - a lake, two buffalos, really nice shots. I was curious and googled your camera specs at the time.

kathleen: Thanks! I am passionate with B&W, much more than with color pictures.

lspriluc, that beach shot looks very interesting. You can get some free programs where you can manipulate the light (Picasa, etc).

osnofian, I love that shot of the building's reflections for I'm a fan of reflectionsin glass, water, etc.

Thank you!

I`m not going to edit my pics. I read somewhere that an image doesn`t start with the camera, it ends there and I couldn`t agree more. However, some of the results of image editing can be very impressive.

Wow! Some great stuff showing up here! Nice pictures, Dick (post more of the sculptures!), osnofian, & lspriluc. Thanks for posting. Sonia, as always, I love yours, too.

roflmho.gif Oh Lawd! We can go at lengths here...while I was of your same philosophy....I also saw what post-processing can do with some photos. I don't use Photoshop (PS) that much except for stitching pictures into panoramics (PS does a very nice job here). I DO use Lightroom to manipulate the light and tones...as any darkroom would have...NOW Black and Whites???? That's another story for I do like processing them. I don't have the filters and believe me, if I can save money by post-processing instead of buying a gamut of filters, etc , guess who wins.

Let me just display this to make my point, if you guys don't mind:

This is the photo "as is" taken from a running car under almost extreme harsh light conditions.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6107/6330474183_184cea0220.jpg"

Same but processed at Lightroom to enhance colors, tones..

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6057/6331228250_00c401acca.jpg

Voilá!

Obviously processed, I no longer have a film camera but a digital. I am not a professional photographer to be able to buy either a Mamiya nor a Hasselblad to make awsome B&W photos... nor a Leica. Don't have a darkroom where I can dodge in or dodge out my film negatives.... I can buy a filter and eventually learn to super-master the light conditions (oh yes!)...but this is digital. Ok Sonia, you made your point!embarrassed_smile.gif

And last: I am not saying you have to cheat in all the photographs taken, for the blue-hour ones you took (and non-processed) are gorgeous, but to each its own. I believe in a balance.

Hm...well...I have to say I`m impressed. You made your point all right.

I don`t consider it cheating, at least as long as one doesn`t pretend the image is unedited and claims to have obtained it by only using his camera, filters and knowledge. It`s just that I enjoy using the camera and actually taking the shots, that moment when the lcd goes "busy" and then the result appears (in longer exposure, the result is not the same as what you see with your own eyes, as the colors and shades are usually much more beautiful).

I don`t enjoy spending time at the PC editing photos, I`d rather be in the wild taking them, which takes enough time.

Now I`m saving for a DSLR, in the meantime I try to read as much as possible about photography and how to take good shots and also try to get the best out of my camera. It`s supposed to be one of the best P&S around and I`ve seen some great images taken with similar ones, so I know it`s possible. I just have to learn how to do it.

Thank you for the example, Sonia, it`s really instructive.

And keep them coming guys!

Awesome comparison Sonia, and great photos Jon... I should have taken better photos of 'Santa Maria' when I could...

Nevertheless, I want to point out that Black and White photography is still a great hobby. Far more difficult that using a DSLR for sure (mostly because you can't see the picture when you take it, and it's not convenient to take too many photos of the same scene because you get out of film fast...), but you still get great photos, totally different grain structure (I prefer film to digital noise), and more resolution that with a digital camera.

Here is a bit of Split, Croatia for your enjoyment (market and north gate):

lspriluc:

Yeah! P&S can do a decent job! That's what I shot with for 6yrs...

You see, I learned photography in the days of SRL's (vs DSRL) : the days of Kodachrome and film...I even went to Film School and dealt with B&W 35mm film and hand light-meters! My Minolta XE-7 35mm expired a long time ago as well as mold-covered Rokkor lenses....crybaby.gifI no longer have a darkroom...so the switch to digital, as I said before, was a no-brainer -even if the quality of the printed image leaves a lot to be desired...

I take my pictures 98% through the viewfinder, using the lcd viewer only for difficult angles and nocturnals. I hate automatic settings except the P mode where it gives me still the liberty to manage f stops (which I prefer over speed). I believe the [picture I showed as an example was either shot in manual (M) mode or P mode.

osnofian, very, very nice black and whites!
