I tried to post a picture and a link here last night -- hit "post" and got the maintenance error. D'oh!

Sonia, I'm on my bike trip now. I rode 70 miles to Santa Cruz yesterday. I talked about it on in another thread: a little detour off subject.

Here's a photo:

And here's the set: Highway 1 scenes.

Gotta get ready if I'm going to Monterey. "If." Ha ha ha.

Fernan -- I was just looking at your flickr account... wow. Gorgeous work! (I'm so far behind in some things and a little ahead in some others and sortv basically scattered around -- I blame the Internet, ha ha ha.)

Quick update about my bike ride: I didn't head to Monterey. I headed to Sunnyvale -- and accidentally rode my bike over a mountain. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN. Santa Cruz Mountain? Hello? Knock, knock, knock, anybody home? Well, now I definitely, exquisitely know. I did have to walk Bike D. some of the way, but I'm -- and I did yell at the mountain and complain about the lack of downhill (I didn't know! I didn't know I'd be riding over a mountain!) -- but I'm feeling good about myself. I rode only 22.5 miles that day, Tuesday, and my mother did come fetch me in Los Gatos, 17 miles short of goal, but I rode over a *%)!(#(&^ mountain!

Yeah, I'd do it again.

Not today, though.

Grendel, love all of them, but I think the coolest is the spider's web. Some lovely diffraction colors there!

Hmm, how about pictures from Cappadocia today. The caves were occupied until 1952.

Stairs in the underground city. The city went down 8 levels, and the first 5 levels are open to tourists.

More good ones, Kristi! I'm going to have to put that on my bucket list of places to visit!

I went on a bike ride with my wife & kids this afternoon, enjoying the beautiful weather we've been having lately. We stopped at a very small (about half a dozen graves) family cemetery a ways down the road from our house. I saw a lizard on a headstone, and thought it might be something good to try my hand at black & white again. Not a great picture, but I think I'm getting better at the process. Thought I'd throw it in to keep things going.

Kristi, I'd like more information about your trip to Cappadocio! When did you go? What are some of the stories about these dwellings? That sort of thing. If you don't mind. What an utterly cool place!

Well, there they spell it Kapadokya!

I was only in the area two days. We drove up from Antalya through the mountains to Konya, then on to Neveshir, where we spent 2 nights. The hotel was interesting, built to look like the cave dwellings. (I saw my first hedgehog out on the lawn the first night.)

You could see the cave homes everywhere. There were some within sight of our hotel. The one picture I posted was a hillside on the way out of town, and the entire hill was covered with openings. As I was told, the dwellings were all occupied until 1952, when the government decreed that people had to move out of the caves (for health reasons, I think). As you can see on the hillside picture, the people built right outside the cave openings, and still use the caves for storage.

The underground city was amazing. As I said, we went down 5 levels, and even I (at 5'4") had to bend double on some of the stairs. It was designed for defense, and there were big stones that could be rolled over to block the doors (with arrow holes in the center.

Everything needed was carved into the stone. In the area where they kept animals, there were bins carved for food and water. In the kitchen area, there were fire pits and stones used as mortars for grinding. There were larger vessels carved in the area where they made wine. The airflow was amazing, even with only 10% of the city open. I think the guide said that the openings for ventilation were far away from the obvious areas to enter the city.

It was hard to take photos down there, so I didn't post many.

We stopped at a number of different sites. The entire area is honeycombed with the caves.

I liked this, on the side of a cliff by the opening to a cave home. These were literally pigeonholes, carved so the birds would roost there.

Oh, and there is actually an underground hotel, though I didn't get into it. It's in the area where that tall rock formation is located (the one with the Turkish flag at the top). Supposedly, half the rooms are entirely underground, and the other half have windows facing out. (I was happy in a hotel that only looked like it was built out of caves — I like some amenities...like sunlight!)

One more thing — many people in my group got up at 4 AM and took a hot air balloon ride over the area. They said it was wonderful, but it wasn't something that was worth the money to me (~US$250 per person for an hour).
