Stephen Hull has been collecting vintage pens for many years and I like the fact that he covers the issue about the quantity of the Floral 22, details many Casein and Celluloid pens that I was not aware off and also the many images of vintage pens. I wish the materials could be reproduced as they are absolutely stunning!

There's obviously been A LOT of research put into this book, in fact, I'd be surprised if Mr. Hull had any kind of life, while he was putting it together.

 

Bringing together the history, all the adverts from trade journals, the patents, and of course examples of all those wonderful pens, must have been a labour of love / herculean task...certainly an astonishing acheivement.

 

I know what you mean about the materials being stunning, Mary, they really are.

 

For a fan of vintage CS, it's a real eye-opener...for a fan of fountain pens in general, a remarkable read.

I've just done a quick search, and Fountain Pens for the Million is available through Conway Stewart's web site...and also online, from Andy's Pens, Writetime, and The Writing Desk.

 

All of these are UK based...I didn't find anything for the U.S. or Canada.

As one who recently had his 71st birthday, let me say a hearty Happy Birthday to Henry!

 

Foutain Pens for the Millions is all Malcolm says it is--I have a number of CS pens although I wouldn't call myself a collector of them. I have the book and found it fascinating in its thoroughness, and very helpful in the numerous photos. If your interested at all in CS pens, this book is a must, but it's also valuable as social history.

 

Don't know if Sam at Pendemonium here in the USA still has the book or not, but earlier I know it was available from her.

This looks really interesting. I just dug out my old FP (a parker a couple of weeks ago). After posting on the Parker board here, I obtained a replacement converter and the pen is working. I happened to mention this to my dad and he goes and tells me that his mom (my grandma) used to work at Conway Stewart at their Mile End factory! I had never heard of them and came back to the FPN to see what I could find out - and lo and behold there is a whole forum and this book is available (my grandma died in 1976).

SWMBO and I have just returned from a trip to London, England where we stumbled across Penfriend in the Burlington Arcade. Much to my delight they had a copy of Stephen Hull's book for sale, which I eagerly snapped up. Unfortunately though I haven't been able to peruse it as it's SWMBO's Xmas gift to me and it is securely wrapped in cellophane...can't even sneak a peek at it. In addition to many pen books, Penfriend had a nice collection of vintage pens for sale as well as modern ones.

Funny, it was because my SWMBO stopped in that delightful store that I now have a Conway Stewart addiction. She bought me a beautiful Wellington there last summer starting me down the path of FPN addiction.

      Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

      No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍

      @FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

      I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

      Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen
