I Made A Pen Stand

Great work. If you sell these to FPN members (http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/innocent/innocent0001.gif), you could offer a variety of cut-out shapes for the ink bottle (Noodlers, Herbin, Iroshizuku, ...) as well as solid platform.

me want!

That's cool, you could make one to hold 2 Noodler's bottles, it might keep them from being as "tippy".

Thanks for all the messages; I'm glad everybody liked it.

In reply to Moagy: The next one will be cherry again, I think. I like the look of the wood, especially after the shellac. There are some nice acrylic materials available but the design would have to be slightly different - the current design would develop stress cracks around the tabs and slots if made in acrylic.

In reply to BeachBum: Ponoko provide the material, you just have to upload a drawing (in Postscript or SVG format) and select from a range of standard materials in standard sizes. The 7x7 inch sheet of cherry veneer MDF was about $4 and the laser cutting charges were about $13. I could have made the cutting slightly cheaper if I had combined some of the cut lines (by moving parts to be adjacent to each other).

In response to suggestions about selling it, I think I will just make the design available for free on my page on the Ponoko site, so anyone who wants to can grab it and make one themselves. I'll post back here when I have figured out how to do that.

WOW! :yikes: I know you had to spend time on the design, but that is an amazing price for a customized, and beautiful pen stand. As others have said, you should sell these on FPN, or at least upload your plans to their web site to sell them via Ponoko. :clap1:

Really, really elegant and impressive. I've been looking all over for an appropriate stand, and yours is very droolworthy! :notworthy1:

It reminds me of a samurai sword stand, I really like it. I hope you don't mind me copying the sword stand look, I want one of those on the secretary in our master bedroom.

Chevalier,

I use a mini samurai-sword stand on my desk to hold dip-pens. They're very useful, but I should tell you that they can be rather unstable. Use blu-tak to hold it in place otherwise you'll be knocking it over at every opportunity that it can find. Those things LOVE to fall over.

That's a very clever design, and a great looking final product.

Nicely done. And I love that you're going all open source with the design, too. Hmmm... maybe I'd suggest a Creative Commons copyright of some description, if only to keep someone else from profitting from that which you've so generously given away.

Ok, this is one of the best things I've seen on FPN! I love the project, from conception, to realization, to the final product. Their services are *beyond* reasonably priced, and you did a stellar job of finishing it up once you received the part.

Damn, the wheels are turning now!

Congratulations - there is nothing like something that you've made yourself, and you'll have it for years to come.

I see it is available now on the Ponoko site, free of charge, as you mention. Thank you for doing that!

Regarding your question for suggestions... How about a bottom tray that is stackable so you could keep post-it notes, etc. in one drawer and then possibly stack yet another drawer for other items? The design is perfect as-is. Just offering a potential suggestion..
