Inks With A "sheen"

After seeing the photo of the gold sheen on the Levenger Cardinal Red, I thought I'd check my Claret.

and with the light on it fpn_1467759508__215_crop.jpg

Funny thing is, I went back and looked in my ink log at the first couple of writing samples of this and there's really nothing there; looking more closely, however, there is some - on a comma, a period and just a few flecks on the bottoms strokes of a few letters, nothing obvious enough to have attracted any scrutiny. As you can see here, the sheen is as heavy as Oku-yama.

The pen has been sitting for a few months, unused except for an occasional line or two in the log to make sure the feed is wet that I didn't look at twice. The pen is a fine nib, very wet Jinhao 611. The paper here is German-made BnR spiral but it also show on the little Polish-made spiral, too. On my two Rhodia pads, the sheen is quite obvious on the wet ink as it dries but most of it is eventually absorbed into the paper, making it hard to see it.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Chromantic, it looks great.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

Why, thanks again.

I have seen the elusive Cyclamen but, sadly, not in great enough quantity to photograph, just a touch here and there, usually the initial stroke from the ink that's been sitting in the tip of the rollerball. Hmm, maybe if I put it in a fountain pen ...

I have it in a very wet writers, and the sheen is most apparent on certain papers (vellum, Tomoe River, etc.) more than others. So Cyclamen is one the inks I'd call a "contextual sheener," while something like Oku-yama or Dark Lilac are truly consistent sheeners.

Pretty! Love the red. Love the sheen. I think I need this one!

I'm thoroughly loving browsing this thread. This beautiful inky concoction on TR caught my eye. Must have! (Thinking how lovely for Christmas cards and so much more!!) Would you mind sharing, please? For the gorgeous BSIAR + Rouge Hematite above, what was your ratio? TRULY GORGEOUS!!! Thank you for sharing your photo, and I hope you'll share the recipe.

Hey there! What a season for Xmas inks, huh?

If you're still around, I'm here with your answer--there wasn't a set ratio! I merely cleaned as much Rouge Hematite out of my Ahab as I could before refilling with BSIAR. I think the potency of both inks mixed naturally to produce this effect. You could try it yourself--"flushing" with RH and then filling with BSIAR may yield similar results.

I think the fact that the Ahab has such a meaty feed helped retain more remnants of the previous ink.

LIST OF INKS WITH SHEEN

Two moderators at a Philippines fountain pen forum, FPN-P, compiled a list of inks with sheen based on posts in this thread. Their list was made in 2014 so may not be totally up-to-date but I found it a valuable resource. Here is the link

Shaylen,

Sailor nano carbon black (pigment) has a very obvious and "crystalline" sheen. I imagine that the Platinum nano ink might be similar because it is a carbon pigment type also, but I have never tried it.

Nicely done ink comparison! https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/thumbup.gif

+1 Sailor Kiwa-guro is my favorite ink!

Sorry for the poor quality of the photo but, yes, that is pink sheen on Sheaffer Skrip Turquoise.

And Skrip Yellow. This photo turned out amazingly well; the dark shading is the sheen and you can clearly see the 'shiny' bit in the Y and e of the bottom Yellow.

I was just doodling after refreshing the ink in my pens for the new year. With the help of handy-dandy close-up lens for the iPhone, here are shots of a couple of inks that usually don't show up on lists of sheeners are...
