Inks With A "sheen"

Yeah, that really makes me boggle. It's one of my most matte inks. I even tried it in my Omas 360 Magnum which lays down such a concentrated/wet line it's a sheen monster, on Tomoe River paper and not a hint of it. I wonder if they had some kind of overstock situation and wanted to try and push some of it off of the shelves with dubious claims of sheen.

They might have mistaken the darker edge as sheen.

I've been experimenting with Yama-budo. I put a small amount in a dish and left it exposed at room temperature before writing with it...

This week was one of the saddest in recent years after a friend's tragic fatal accident at age 41. I was needfully distracting my mind in the hour before their funeral service in a different city, so dropped in to a brick and mortar fp store. I had a memory that Yama-Budo sheened, but the storeperson didn't know enough about inks to confirm it. Bought it anyway. Then came across this post again tonight while checking whether it was a sheener. I've not even inked a pen with it - thanks to Goudy's post it's gone straight into an open inkwell. It's now serving as an incentive to start and complete a uni research report, so a few days dehydrating will work nicely (probably a week!). I want to write another small note to the grieving wife as well, so all up, a perfect purchase.

Hi Intellidepth - So sorry to hear about your loss, but I'm glad my post has been helpful.

In my experiments with Yama-Budo, 2 days dehydration in a shallow dish seemed to give the best results - after which the ink got too sticky to be usable (though a few drops of water might revive it).

Abouth a month ago I bought some L'Artisan Pastellier Callifolio inks. Bleu Mediterrannée and Violet have a subtle sheen, red in the first and golden in the second. I only have my iPhone camera and I'm afraid I can't quite capture it, but here it is how the inks look:

I was surprised to find a little bit of sheen in Waterman Mysterious Blue (left) and Visconti Blue (right). I left my two pens uncapped for a while and I had to "warm them up" on a piece of scrap paper.

Ordinary greaseproof kitchen paper seems to be excellent at highlighting sheen, as can be seen from Sailor's Oku-Yama in the following scan;

Well... actually the real name is BlackStone... SuSeMai was the "Code Name" (Super Secret Maker of Ink) ;)

The BlackStone Powder Inks were unveiled during the Toronto Pen Show (follow the link in my signature) ... they will be soon on the market. They are the most amazing inks with the most amazing properties. Lots of reviews and testing on the Inky Thoughts thread. Look for Red Cashmere, Blue Cashmere and Black Cashmere,

If you feel like you need them NOW... drop a line to Kevin at JustWrite.com.au and gently beg for it. :D

Must have this ink! Is it available, nowadays? I sure hope so!

Which one?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I recently had the good fortune of finding an old Visconti Blue bottle and it sheens like crazy, especially in Tomoe River paper (which is not much of a surprise, is it?). My photographic skills aren't great but I think you can see a bit of what I'm talking about in this image:

I think I should also come in and share some sheen porn. (Since I finally got my camera to work)
First of all, KWZ Azure 5. It sheened the typical magenta for me, instead of silver.

Bungbox Sapphire. The sheen's strong, but somewhat distracting.

Out of the blue.... Noodler's blue! I never expected this to sheen!

Metzger & Mendel Turquoise. The sheen is a brilliant pink that's really hard to capture.

KWZ IG Blue #6

At last, this. Here's damming evidence that Sydney harbour blue sheens not one, but THREE colors! The basic sheen is pink, and it sheens gold, with sparkles of green, when it pools. Amazing!

(You can't see the green well in this photo - I'll play around more)

Nice! I haven't noticed any sheen on KWZI IG Blue #6, which paper did you use?

It's quite a cheap paper from blue-covered notebooks at Daiso :lticaptd: All the above are done on the same paper.

I've only got a single one of those that I use sparingly (Only for ink reviewing), but man - the paper is amazing. It's poor man's Tomoe.

Ah, Daiso is a Japanese chain market that has a few shops here in LA. Even I'm on the search of these mythical notebooks, as I've never seen them show up again (But I haven't checked back, either.)

It looks like this (Picture pulled from internet) It's the one with the blue cover on the top. The paper has quite more texture than Tomoe and isn't as thin, but is still quite thin by most standards. I haven't seen anything bleed through the paper and it makes anything sheen on it, but it gives long dry times.

If anyone in my area has seen these still hanging around, please get a few - but don't forget to leave some for me :P
