Inks With A "sheen"

Hi Inkstainedruth,

I don't have a lot of experience with purples, but I would recommend checking out Sailor Jentle Blue (above) where the ink is blue and the sheen is red, it gives a very purple appearance when the light hits it.

I'm looking for suggestions for a dark purple or purple-black in that has sheen.

Look no further! Diamine Bilberry is the answer. So purple it's almost black and is crazy with sheen. See my post number 202 in this thread which shows a clear example. In fact, you posted number 203. Anyway, I'd call Bilberry a purple-black. Although my sheen example shows the purple hue most vividly, I think that was the paper and the photo lighting. On most papers and in most light it's most difficult to discern the purple at all, it often appearing to be fully black. You can buy Diamine in 30ml bottles from ISellPens, as well as 3ml samples.

Going back further in this thread, I state I can see no sheen with Bilberry, at all. That was before I become aware of the subtleties of sheen and able to recognize it. When I finally did become familiar with the phenomena of sheen, it's become almost impossible to NOT see it and Bilberry is eat up with the sheen. ;)

I have one reservation with Bilberry, though. It's one of Diamine's more staining inks. I've never fully gotten it out of my vintage flex Waterman. OTOH, I've only used water. Is it OK to expose a vintage pen to ammonia (the sac is a replacement)?

Posted this query on a thread about purple ink recommendations, then later on saw this one, so I thought I'd solicit responses here as well.

I'm looking for suggestions for a dark purple or purple-black in that has sheen. I've seen a few names bandied about but not all in one compact message. I have no experience with inks so far discussed that seem ideal (except for possibly Solferino, which I know is too bright a color)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions; so far I've taken note is Diamine Damson & Eclipe); the aftermentioned Solferino (which I've seen and it's too bright and pink); PR Tanzanite and American Blue; the no-longer available Montblanc Lavender. Also Aurora Black.

The reason that i"m looking for said ink (if it exists) is that I got a thank you card I had gotten yesterday written in the ink (which admittedly have come from a BP) which and it was amazing how much it struck me for the amount of sheen the ink -- whatever it is -- had).

Diamine Eclipse and its yellow sheen might suit your tastes

HOLY Private Reserve Tanzanite! This ink almost looks sparkly!!! Pen is Monteverde Sleeping Beauty Broad, paper is Staples Bagasse.

(Now with 100% more white balance!)

@ sailor kenshin:

A friend of mine looked at the card on Wednesday, and she said that she thinks it was written with a gel pen.

So that's disappointing, but I still think that there may be a FP ink out there that is close.

@ notbob:

Diamine Bilberry, PR Tanznite and Diamine Eclipse are all almost as dark as what I want for ink color, but the sheen isn't the color I want; I like the color of the sheen of the PR Ebony Blue (but the ink itself is too light and too teal-toned for my taste).

Anyone know if Ebony Purple sheens?

Ebony Purple has an outline sheen but it's gold. I don't think I know of any purples with a red sheen

If you mix Noodler's BSIAR with a touch of J. Herbin's Rouge Hematite, you get funky red writing with dark GREEN sheen.

Kinda like a Christmas tree ink! I'll post pictures when I have time to upload them from my camera...

That sheen is one of the reasons Naples Blue is my ultimate ink. So lovely.

Private Reserve Naples Blue has a hint of sheen.

I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but Diamine Asa Blue has a reddish sheen to it :) This was written using a Visconti Homo Sapiens 1.1mm Stub. On top of that one, you can see the smeared Akkerman Shocking Blue, also with a reddish sheen, written with a Pilot Custom 823 ground to a stub by Dan Smith.

I think Shocking Blue has the BEST sheen of anything I have tried yet. On quite a few papers, too.

Which one would you say has better sheen?

Got a package from Diamine today. That makes 50 bottles of Diamine, I think. I took this using an iPhone camera. I wish I could zoom in more, but I can't :/

Okay, here are my photos---Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses + J. Herbin's Rouge Hematite for green sheeny goodness. Makes me want to mix R.H. with everything now.

The funky thing is how the ink "changes color"---it still looks like BSIAR when wet, but dries to what you see in these photographs. Very cool!

I've been playing with Tomoe River paper today, and man is it fun. This is Syo-Ro on it written with a Namiki Falcon Bold (the dry times aren't too bad either).
