I've been playing around with new (to me) inks --and some old one's-- and different papers to see when and where an ink will sheen. I'm learning it's hard to find an ink that will NOT sheen, to a certain extent. My least sheeny ink is Diamine Blue Sapphire. But, close up with a 7X loupe and in the right light, behold!, small traces of sheen. Often, it's not obvious as the sheen is jes a few random flecks of gold sparkle that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Other times, it's so blatant, you can hardly see the ink for the sheen. In the case of Diamine Wild Stawberry on Tomoe River paper, you can actually FEEL the sheen. No kidding.

I've also been trying to learn more about taking macro photos with my camera and how best to light ink sheen. I've been working with two lighting approaches. One is a fluorescent light in an otherwise dark room. This is an angle shot with the light bouncing off the ink while viewing it at an obtuse angle. The other mode is in direct sunlight, shooting off the page at an acute angle to the incoming sun's rays. Here's a shot of the later:

fpn_1359821974__sheen1.jpg

Top line is Diamine Wild Strawberry (DWS) from a Noodler Creaper. Next line down is Noodler Cactus Fruit Eel from a Noodler Konrad Ebo. Third line down is Diamine Bilberry from a vintage Waterman. Bottom line is PR Ebony Blue from a 2.0mm dip pen.

Man! ...that Bilberry blows the DWS away when it comes to sheening. You can see it sheen from across the room. These are all on Tomoe River paper, but I'm discovering CF and Rhodia are almost as good for revealing sheen.

I see, now, the shot looks a little dark. No doubt from the camera stopping way down to prevent overexposure of the white TR paper. I'll crank up the white balance next time to brighten the ink colors.

Till next post, keep yer sheeny side up! ;)

Someone on another thread said that they got sheen from Private Reserve Avocado. Anyone experience this?

Great pic, notbob!

Thank you, mhphoto.

I think harder than to see sheen, is getting a good photo. These macro shots are really forcing me learn to use my camera. So, that's what all those buttons are for! Also, learning how to use lighting. Both your shots of JH Hematite and shaylen's shots of Sailor Sky High are are positively stunning in revealing the myriad and depth of colors hidden in ink sheen. It's like discovering a secret new world. Big fun! ;)

What an amazing thread! I swear I must have gone through all fives pages worth of posts with my eyes wide wide open. I already have Rouge Hematite, and I know that it has sheen. But Sailor Jentle Apricot?! What a wonderful surprise! I will be swapping the Lamy's M nib to the 1.5 italic, just to see that sheen! Also, my S.O.'s Sailor Epinard, which I swore not to touch, will heretofore be touched, by me, to be loaded into a wet-writing pen.

Now I've got to get me some PR Tanzanite and Sailor Sky High. Yay! :puddle:

Dear FPN admins, mods, and other lesser forumcrats:

I am formally requesting this thread be pinned.

If for no other reason, than it seems to get missed by std FPN auto-machinations. I rarely see it in "view new content", despite new articles, and NEVER in "my content", no matter how may times I contribute to it. Others seem to suffer this glitch, too. I have to independently bookmark this thread or do a search to even find it.

Besides, it's a pioneering thread. It's done more to energize my interest in pens and inks than any other factor. A little known and amazingly intriguing hidden side of inks. I jes bought a whole mess o' ink samples, two new FPs, and new lighting, jes to better view/photo ink sheen. May not be worth an entire forum sub-category, but I don't think it being "pinned" is asking too much. Please, consider it.

Thank you.

I strongly second the motion! This thread is just awesome, and has uplifted my already-high love for FP inks. Let's spread the love more by pinning this thread. :notworthy1:

mhphoto.... what's that vert line on the far left? Is that Prussian Blue, also?

"TRANSITIONAL" SHEEN

OK, here's something I've been working on. It's a phenomena I've noticed with a few inks whereby there is a transitional sheen that can only be seen while the ink is still drying. It's the same, but different. It's a very luminescent sheen that occurs after the ink is initially laid down, but before it fully dries. IOW, the ink is still partially wet. I managed to capture a rather poor shot of it, here:

fpn_1365534914__shine_sheen.jpg

This transitional sheen (a phrase I jes made up) last only for a short while, until the ink fully dries, then a different sheen appears which is almost as reflective if properly lighted, but not as luminescent. I can actually observe this transition occurring while it dries, even speed it up if I lightly blow on it. You can tell the difference in the 3rd from the right down stroke, which is mostly dry. The last down stroke on the far right, the ink is still drying. You can see the wet red ink in the center of the bright green transitional sheen. Believe me, it's the ink doing this, not the angle of the light, in this case natural light from a window. All three down strokes are at the same angle to the light. I'm having a really hard time setting up for this type of photo, because of the time factor, so I ended up holding both the camera and paper by hand instead of taking a tripod shot. Also, I think I may have recently damaged my camera and knocked my camera's ability to auto focus out of whack. Not sure yet.

As usual, the ink is my favorite sheen king, Diamine Wild Strawberry, on CF paper laid down by a Creaper. If anyone else has observed this "transitional sheen", I'd like to hear about it. If for no other reason than to reassure myself I can still trust my visual faculties. ;)

I'm cross posting these two because I kind of put them in the wrong thread...

http://www.suramar.org/fpn/iro-syo-ro.jpg

I just discovered that Iroshizuku Syo-ro has pretty amazing sheen. I had no idea! Thank goodness for Goulet ink samples!! This just catapulted to the top of my wish list!

ANother one to add... and this one was a REAL surprise to me! The new Iroshizuku ink Shin-kai! Pretty exciting. THis is on Clairefontaine classic again, but this time with my Omas (long name) Cruise 14k M... I was reviewing the pen when I made this INCREDIBLE DISCOVERY!

I haven't seen Burgundy Mist mentioned so I thought I would upload a pic. It has a great golden sheen.

I hate you for bringing that up, bigeddie. (Just joking...I am such a sucker for sheen and shading).

Posted this query on a thread about purple ink recommendations, then later on saw this one, so I thought I'd solicit responses here as well.

I'm looking for suggestions for a dark purple or purple-black in that has sheen. I've seen a few names bandied about but not all in one compact message. I have no experience with inks so far discussed that seem ideal (except for possibly Solferino, which I know is too bright a color)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions; so far I've taken note is Diamine Damson & Eclipe); the aftermentioned Solferino (which I've seen and it's too bright and pink); PR Tanzanite and American Blue; the no-longer available Montblanc Lavender. Also Aurora Black.

The reason that i"m looking for said ink (if it exists) is that I got a thank you card I had gotten yesterday written in the ink (which admittedly have come from a BP) which and it was amazing how much it struck me for the amount of sheen the ink -- whatever it is -- had).
