I'll have to take some more tomorrow of other inks. I know I've done some recent reviews with sheeny inks, but I don't remember them offhand.

Whenever I get depressed, I find this topic and it makes me happy again.

It also steals my wallet to buy more inks, but that's a small price to pay for sunshine and sparkles.

Thanks for the pics! I've never seen KTC shine like that before...looks like I'll need to play around with my dip pens one day. =D

Thanks!

These are so beautiful! I have a question though, does the shading work better with a thick nib or dip pen or would it not show up at all in a fine tipped pen?

Are you talking about actual shading, or creating ink flow to facilitate sheen on inks that are sheeny?

If shading, then yes, and no. While fine nibs seem (to me, at least) to show less shading than bold nibs—and certainly less than flex nibs—I've found that the nib nibs I use (very fine point, very flexible) don't show nearly the shading as the Noodler's flex pens. And shading is just so dependent on many other factors that it's hard to give a straight answer. Paper absorbance, technique, flow properties of the ink, wet or dry pen, pressure, and nib flexibility all affect shading.

Now, if you were talking about sheen, I've found that the wetter the nib, the greater the sheen.

This is my first time reading this thread and I'm so glad to have and not so glad to have... both in good ways.

Sorry, don't have pictures on this reply but do have questions. So if one is using a dry nib for an ink that has a lot of sheen (aka pigments) and the sheen doesn't show, where are the pigments? In the nib/feed?

Also, I understand that the macro shots are done to really emphasize the sheen using the right angles but are they really as prominent as they look in the pictures? I'm mainly talking about real high sheen inks like J Herbin Hematite and PR Ebony Blue and such.

I jes stumbled across this thread and am amazed at how many inks are sheening for mhphoto. I have several of these inks and the same paper and I get zero sheen from any of them. I gotta wonder if there isn't some other phenomena at work, here, like humidity, residual chemicals, etc.

Yes, even when my Wild Strawberry and Billberry inks are delivered very wetly from Noodler flex pens with HUGE shading, I get zero sheen. I even dropped blobs of DWS ink on Rhodia and waited for it to dry. Still, no sheen. Do I gotta wait for some extended period of time? Are you cleaning your pens with some particular chemical other than water? Sorry, but I got at least 40 ink samples, many Noodler, a dozen papers, and have yet to see a single combination exhibit sheen. I will say I'm at 8000 ft elev and it's quite dry, here. Go figure. 8|

DOH!!!

I spoke too soon. I jes checked on another huge blob of Diamine Wild Strawberry, this one a full convex drop of undisturbed ink, left to dry on a sheet of Rhodia dotpad. It finally dried and we're talking monster sheen. I mean, almost completely green sheen. I can't even see any red. I've never seen this before. I was writing all yesterday with my DWS in my Creaper and got monster shading on dotpad, but not a trace of sheen to be found. Well, I see it now. As I mentioned previously, It must be due to the very dry climate up here in the CO Rockies.

Ooooo, shinyyyy. Awesome.I used to have Diamine Steel blue. What causes sheen?

Sheen is, according to Nathan Tardif, the crystallization that occurs when certain inks dry, usually in areas that were wetter (the bottom parts of heavily shaded letters) and around the edges (where some inks tend to pool, especially with flexible script). I'm not clear on the cause of the crystallization, (i.e., whether it's caused by a certain ingredient, a class of ingredients, etc.) There is no sheen when the ink is wet, only when dry.

Sheen is almost always more visible when viewed at an angle (and many times only visible at an angle) with a light source behind the paper (which is why all my pictures of sheen are taken at an angle). And inks smearing and sheen, at least in my experience, seem to be independent qualities, not dependent on each other. :)

Nope! Just plain ol' water. And while there are a few Noodler's inks with sheen that come to mind (Navy, 54th Massachusetts, Legal Lapis, Bad Blue Heron, English Roses), they're all very subtle compared to, say, Diamine's Majestic Blue, Sherwood Green, and Sargasso Sea, or Private Reserve's Ebony Blue and Electric DC Blue, or Sailor Sky High or Sei-Boku. So I've come to not even expect sheen from any new Noodler's inks I try. Most every sheen picture I do was taken of ink on Rhodia, and the two main test pens I use (a Noodler's Creaper Flex and a Noodler's Creaper body fitted with a very flexible nib from a Waterman 52) write very wet (well, the 52 nib doesn't, but I'm usually a bit heavy handed with it during normal writing so the end result is the same). Aside from the ink, I'd say a good non-absorbent paper is most important. And then all it takes to see the sheen (if it's there at all) is a light source and looking at the sample from an angle with the light behind it.

Ah-ha! I knew it! I jes knew that was not a stock Noodler pen giving you all that flex. ;)

I also noticed what you say about Rhodia paper, which I've only recently acquired. My sheen revelation came with DWS on Rhodia. The same ink on CF failed miserably, much to my surprise, as I'd picked CF first and foremost for its resistance to bleed through. Yet, when I put a drop of DWS on CF, it eventually absorbed the entire drop (!) and pretty much hosed any sheen. There's some kinda something on the perimeter of that absorbed dried DWS/CF splotch, but it isn't sheen.

I also agree with your call on Noodler inks. I tried a full drop of Cactus Fruit Eel on Rhodia. It has yet to even dry after 48 hrs and is still wet to the touch.

I'll try some DWS on Tomoe River paper. I'm definitely gonna get me some of that Bond Smooth Onion Skin paper. I love thin sheer paper, sheen or not.

I wonder if sheen is actually the result of paper not absorbing the ink and forcing it to dry on the surface or might there be some chemical within the paper itself which promotes sheening. I'll try some other papers and note absorbancy vs sheening.

I'll try some DWS on Tomoe River paper.

I did it and guess what. Ink will sheen while still wet!

Yes, indeedy, my sheeny friends. I have cream and white Tomoe River paper. I did my best Creaper flexation with DWS on white TR paper and I could plainly see the green sheen while the ink was still wet. I smeared it to make sure. I don't know if it was jes drying at the edges --DWS dries pretty fast-- and remaining wet in the center, as I suspect, but it was definitely still wet. I could smear it and I could pick up wet ink with blotter paper, all while seeing visible green sheen.

BTW, this TR paper is amazing. So thin, yet it resisted my Creaper's reaper nib tip like no other paper. This nib will effortlessly make Rhodia and CF tear and bleed. The TR paper jes laughs. Zero bleed through with barely any see-though.

My camera can get in pretty close and I tried to catch it, but I am very new to this kind of macro photography. I'll play around with it until I can get some good shots and get back with pics. Plus, I gotta order me some of that PR Ebony Blue. That's the most luscious --and spooky!-- example of sheen I've seen.

The sheen chronicles continue. Whatta hoot! ;)

OK .....here we go..... my first photo post to FPN:

fpn_1356809399__sheen_dws.jpg

This is Diamine Wild Strawberry on Tomoe River white paper layed down by a Creaper flex pen. I shot the photo looking out the window towards outside sunlight, so I guess that's why the sheen looks gold instead of green. It is not a shot of the still wet ink showing sheen. I'll try to capture that later when I perfect my macro skills.

BTW, can anyone tell me why this entire thread does not appear in "my content" despite my having posted to it several times?. I must catch it in "view new content" or do a search for sheen. Not a big problem, but a tad annoying.

I'm surprised that Diamine Majestic Blue hasn't made an appearance yet. Unfortunately, I don't have a proper pic of it to upload. Very nice pinky-red sheen.

It does the same thing to me! :gaah: I only ever visit the thread through google when my mind's on my sheen and my sheen's on my mind.
