removing nib and feed from a Parker 21

Recommended Posts

I picked up a Parker 21 with inverted clip today at the locak flea market for a buck!

Has a cracked hood I want to repair (or replace), but when I attempted to take the pen apart, the hood, feed, and nib all came off together.

How do I get the feed and nib out? I don't want to force anything. No sealant on the threads.

This is the later 21 with "hidden" nib, but not a super.

Thanks!

Peter

Never mind -- the problem solved itself. I discovered that the nib and feed are a press fit, and that there wasn't just one crack in the hood --- I was attempting to seal the crack with shellac as a temporary fix when the other crack ran through the end and the hood fell into to parts.

Off to Hobby Lobby tomorrow for some 3502 model cement....

I will also measure it when fixed -- I suspect the cracking problem is related to shrinkage -- the Lucite shrinks and the feed doesn't, something has to give, and the lucite is brittle...

Hello Folks - new to the forum; nice to be here.

My question relates to a different pen than the initial poster's, but the thread title applies, so thought I'd just continue on this thread.

I think this is a 21 Special, and would appreciate some guidance before I destroy the hood. I need to remove the nib and feed, because micro-cracks in the hood are allowing ink out. I'm planning to lightly coat the inside of the hood with thin super glue before reassembling.

So do I push on the back part of the hood (i.e. where the filler tube goes)? I've seen a video with this approach, but the nib opening is clearly too small to allow that whole assembly (see first pic) to pass through.

Or do I push on the nib part or pull on the feeder tube housing so that everything exits through the large/threaded part of the hood? And if the latter approach, how to do it without harming the nib or housing?

I've already soaked it plenty with H2O, dish soap and ammonia. Could apply some heat too if advisable.

Thanks,

Jeff

It definitely looks like you have some shrinkage in that hood, and that's probably what's holding the collector in place. I can see a spot near the front of the hood where it's shrunken and there are some microcracks. I'd suggest replacing the hood.
