All the entries keep getting more and more beautiful! This has quickly become my favorite thread on the FPN.

Here's entry no. 3 for me.

PIP: The English is written with Manuscript Calligraphy pen with MB Toffee Brown. The Arabic is done with a Sheaffer Italic pen ground to left oblique with Sheaffer Skrip Red ink and a Pelikan school pen ground to a small left oblique with Lamy Black ink.The paper is tea stained Mondi IQ Selection 160 gsm.

Thanks hlyuqi. Not that your beautiful Copperplate needs any decoration but you can do a Copperplate entry in the style found in The Universal Penman where one word is written in Gothic and flourished with a flex nib - I think you can go a lovely composition in that style with the word 'King' written in Gothic or Batarde and flourished with the flex nib - especially the stem of the 'K'. The rest of the text is balanced around this word. What do you think?

I'll probably do a Copperplate entry too but I don't know if I can pull off that style, I'll make mine a simple one I think.

Don't give up!

I think the style that appears at the top of the bottom page is very pleasing. A simple composition like that would be a good contender in my opinion. You can just write it out and balance the last like with writing 'Psalm 45:1' to the right on the line below the last one.

It would be a pity not to enter such a splendid competition, though I don't aspire to the heights reached by so many entrants. Such talents as I have are confined to simple writing and I am entering here two versions of the required verse, one in italic and the other in a simplified roundhand.http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s289/kent993/img060.jpg

The italic was written with a vintage Pelikan fitted with an italic nib; the roundhand with a vintage Belmont. Both are on a Daler layout pad.

I might borrow this idea and use it the next time I'm teaching poetry. Hopefully get my students to really think about what they're writing.

Some spectacular entries so far! I don't envy the person who has to judge these.

I used a Lamy Joy 1.5mm with Noodler's Black. ...............

I like it! I notice that your Lamy 1.5 is producing a much softer line than mine - less pointy and sharp; is that straight off the pen or have you done anything particular to get this nice soft look?

Thanks. The soft look is accidental. I think it is due to the Strathmore paper being more textured than I'm used to using with that pen.

It's been said, but I don't envy the judges in this contest! Fantastic uncial submissions, some bristling blackletter, and I love the Insular interpretation, too!

Shoot, Sister Mary Alecia wouldn't have smacked you with a ruler, like she did Harley! LOL

Who's Harley? Is that the Marine?

No, the Marine is my son, Joey. I went to parochial school and the nuns, at least back then, where well known for being skilled with using a ruler for discipline. LOL Harley was a classmate who had the most personal relationship with Sister Mary Alicia's ruler. Bad penmanship was one of the things not tolerated and poor Harley's was always getting the ruler across his palm or knuckles for penmanship or some other stunt,

I was inspired!!! Not the cleanest entry yet, (I need to work on my Uncial more before it can compare to Salman's) but figured Id put it in anyways. Hopefully going to throw one more up before time is up.

Edit for PIP, (oops) Pen: an old calligraphy italic FP (no markings/name) Ink: J.Herbin "Eclat De Saphir" for the outside and "Poussiere De Lune" for the inside. Paper: Southworth Ivory Business 25% cotton, 24lb. paper.

Here is the straight on shot if it's needed for the contest: http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s79/PoppinSwav/Psalm45-1a.jpg

This is very nice - the colors are beautiful and the layout is pleasing to the eye.

(And your uncial is just fine and more uniform than mine btw.)

I'm loving all the entries in this thread! :notworthy1: They're really, really well-done and they inspired me to start another entry a few days ago. I'm nearly done with it and will post it as soon as I can!

Hi all, I was inspired by all the great work here and thought I'd post my own attempt. I don't know if I qualify for the competition (this is only my second post and I have a tendency to draw letters rather than write them) but if anyone enjoys looking at it a tenth as much as I enjoyed making it, all is right with the world.

PIP - Pens: I used my entire rotation, the twins (a pair of identical Noodler's Flexes) and a broken hobby store Scheafer (let's call it — leaky).

Paper: Strathmore bristol and a no-name white card stock that feathers like a molting parrot (more so when wet)

Ink: Noodler's Nightshade

Inspiration: when my heart overflows, normally so does my inkwell.
