REMINDER: One of the very few rules (in the opening post) is to use a fountain pen. After all, we are the Fountain Pen Network. :) If that is too stupid, let me know and I'll throw that rule out, but I kinda' like it.

I am down with that rule.

Forgot to add my "PIP" heh. Pen: Sheaffer Italic F Calligraphy Pen, Ink: Noodler's Standard Brown, (my favorite brown, and most currently used ink) Paper: Hehe, a leaf that I picked up (I collected 15 or so for testing purposes) not far from my apartment. One side has a "fuzz" that the pen actually "carves" into. After the first writing, the leaf was rinsed in water to remove to excess fuzz from the lettering, dried in the sun, then re written. The pictures I have of the wet leaf really show the "embossed" look the letters have. It's been a fun adventure. :) Thank you very much to everyone who commented on it! :happyberet:

Edit: to add a link to the wet leaf if you would like to see the "embossed/carved" effect. I wont post it in the forum to save on thread space.

Time for me to chime in. Unfortunately there was a little feathering on some parts of the leaf. I had a better leaf done up, but spelled "swiftly" wrong, so had to trash it. :headsmack:

This contest gave me some neat ideas! Wondering if its allowed to have multiple entries? May do up one on actual paper heh.

That is easily the most cool thing I have EVER seen done with pen and ink!!! AWESOME!!!

Man that's just too cool!

Pen looks Great Pendleton, but I'm no calligrapher. I'll enjoy watching this thread though!

Need a pen repaired or a nib re-ground? I'd love to help you out.

Both samples are simply awesome! Very nice photographs. I especially like the second with the "fuzz" on the leaf in the pile of leaves. I promised I would have an entry, but I can clearly see that I'm completely out classed on this one! Good luck to the eventual winner, I'll try to have my *pathetic* sample up later for you all to laugh at!

Edit: I like the fountain pen "rule", as this is The Fountain Pen Network! I'm sure that can include pens such as the Speedball fountain pen and the Akerman pump pen. Plus there are many other specialty fountain pens with brush and glass nibs to explore. I see it as part of the challenge.

I think the rule for using a fountain pen only, should be kept. As you stated, this is a fountain pen network.

I don't know how to do calligraphy yet ... I hope that calligraphy isn't a requirement, because then I won't be able to play too.

:notworthy1: The embossed leaf is definitely one of my favorites of this contest!

BTW, does a dip pen count as a fountain pen?

Is that a magnolia leaf?

I cant guarantee it, but I do believe so, yes. Ironically I picked them up on Magnolia Blvd. in North Hollywood.

So many amazing pieces have been posted in this thread! Thank you for starting up this contest. I find it very very inspirational.

Very nice JBB, (as to be expected) A very beautiful example indeed. I need to buy some ink that can be used on black paper. (not that I own any anyways) You may be getting a PM about it soon... lol

As far as the rules go. I personally think dip pens should be allowed. I wanted to use a dip nib for this, but they would cut through my leaf, so I defaulted to my favorite broad stroke script.

Love this thread!!!

But..... If I decide to choose the winner by popular vote (which I am thinking would be a good way to go) ... only one vote per person. :) Any thoughts?

I've made good experience with this procedure:

- all entries are made

- a jury (two or three trustworthy members) picks out 12-15 candidates - maybe not necessary here, if there aren't too many contributions

- a new thread is made with all those candidates gathered in one post - without any directing comments our misleading discussions

- then everyone is invited to give points: 3 for his first place, 2 for his second and three, well you can guess. But everything strictly without discussion or any comments, just the names and the points. Timeline: two/three weeks.

- Then everything is added and voilá: We have a winner.

Greetings,

Michael

Absolutely, multiple entries allowed thumbup.gifthumbup.gif ... in this case I'm thinking more is better! Gotta love the leaf! But..... I have started to work on mine with dip pen. Is it okay if I post it anyway? All my broad edge FPs have given out and I C.B.A. to try and fix them at this point. The rule seems reasonable, but unfortunately that's kinda what I had to work with. If you do not see it as abiding with our rules, then overlook it when judging, perhaps? :)

Here's mine! Thanks to a Latinist friend of mine, I was able to find the correct passage in the Latin Vulgate. It was fun to do calligraphy again after a few months of no practise! I should work on decorating, though - I generally have no idea what to do for decorations!

There is some slight feathering, but it was the only blank paper I had that wasn't cheap copier paper.

Ah yes! This is killer cool! And thank you for pointing out that the same verse may be found nearby in other versions.

Just a suggestion, not a new rule: how about including PIP (pen, ink, paper) used in your entries. It is usually interesting to all of us.

Reminder: One rule is to use a fountain pen. rolleyes.gif

Thanks ~

For this, I used Diamine Imperial Purple in a Pilot Parallel 6.0mm pen for the big letter 'E'; De Atramentis Silver Grey in a Lamy Safari 1.5mm for the rest of the verse. The paper was from a random calligraphy practise pad that came with a book I got.

The random dots are Diamine Monaco Red, Iroshizuku Kon-Peki and Diamine Kelly Green used with the same Lamy 1.5mm nib (thank goodness for swappable nibs! :P).

P.S. Thanks, everyone, for your kind words! :)

Well, here is my attempt at some calligraphy... truth be told it is actually the first project that I have done, so even if it doesn't compare to alot of the art on here, it is still a small victory for me :) I used a fp from a 20$ pack of three Schaeffers from staples, with the included ink and printer paper(for all that's worth lol)post-70861-0-11236600-1308778228.jpg
