A Prize Worth Writing For ~ Penmanship Contest

My second entry...

PIP is Brause dip pen with "Blue Pumpkin" nib, Speedball super pigmented acrylic silver ink, and pale pink Strathmore parchment paper.

My camera is pretty bad :crybaby: ...so the paper is pink, not yellow, and the ink is much more glittery than it looks. Also, somehow it looks crooked in this picture.

 Okay.

If I have time, I'll get some colored ink and maybe a broader italic nib, and make a 100% natural version. Anyway I really wanted to improve the quality of the calligraphy.

I'll also try taking a picture instead of scanning. I wasn't so happy with how it came out in the scanner. It made the ink light and any smears dark!

(By the way, the black and white version is a "natural" scan.

I absolutely loved your work - all three of them! Please don't be disheartened by the rules.

Thanks. But I went out and bought some yellow (sheaffer cartridge) and red (manuscript cartridge) inks. There is no real FP store near me, so I had to use these calligraphy inks.

Red was applied with a Manuscript F italic pen, and the Yellow was applied with a Pilot 78g. I had to suck the yellow ink out of the cartridge with a syringe and inject it into the squeeze fill converter of the 78g. After using it, I flushed the pen immediately, because these are not very fountain pen friendly inks.

Oh, and the dot of blue in the peace sign is Bay State Blue from a Pilot VP F.

This is now a 100% "all natural" scan of my original work using only fountain pens!

(I'll see if I have time to make a complete redo.)

Okay. I redid it. (I'm really excited about that pen, and I'm on a buying freeze for awhile.) This is how I originally intended it to look anyway. I used lettering guides to keep my letters at the right angle and proportion.

This time I used.

Paper: "gold" parchment paper.

Pens: Lamy 1.1, Pilot Falcon, Pilot VP, Manuscript F, Pilot 78g.

Inks: Noodler's Black, Lamy Black, Pilot Black, Manuscript Red, Sheaffer Yellow, Noodler's Baystate Blue.

No digital touch ups, just scanned and posted! :)

Enjoying all the entries - so many styles and hands! Here's my second effort:

fpn_1308992970__label_lores.jpg

Tried to make this one look like an old gummed label - seemed to suit the writing style! Funny how you only see the faults when it's up on the screen. Fun to do though.

Unidentified old paper / Diamine Graphite ink / Damaged Parker Slimfold that only writes upside-down!

Sincerely, beak.

Beautiful specimens throughout this thread so far!

I know if I wait 'til I can do it better, I'll never get there. So here we are. Comments & suggestions welcome.

OK, here goes for my feeble attempt. I wasn't going to, because my efforts are just not in the same league as some of the others already posted. However, when my 17yo son said go for it, well, how could I let him down?

Pen: Parker 75 with factory broad italic

Ink: Diamine Steel Blue

Paper: Pukka Jotta 80gsm (and until I saw the photographs, I never realised that it had feathered!)

Completed mine in three sittings. Utterly horrified of what I did on the third. I'll post it anyway because I actually got my lazy derriere around to committing to it. Not that it's three sittings worth of work, mind me :L

PIP: Parker Vector Calligraphy fp, Century penholder with two sizes of Hiro Rond nib, Private Reserve Ebony Purple diluted with water, Calli black ink, some feathery half-decent sketch pad paper.

Entry No. 1 for me:

Manuscript calligraphy pen with MB Toffee Brown on left over Bristol paper from another project. There are some artifacts from the rather poor scanner that I have access to these days.

Edited to add: The Arabic portion was written with Dollar Qalam with Lamy Black and Pelikan Brilliant Brown inks.

I plan on doing three more compositions. One more with an alternate English/Arabic combination, the second in a modified italic hand and the third with a dip pen. I'm not sure I'll get all three in before the deadline so I have at least one in :-)
