A Prize Worth Writing For ~ Penmanship Contest

Recommended Posts

Well, here is my attempt at some calligraphy... truth be told it is actually the first project that I have done, so even if it doesn't compare to alot of the art on here, it is still a small victory for me :) I used a fp from a 20$ pack of three Schaeffers from staples, with the included ink and printer paper(for all that's worth lol)post-70861-0-11236600-1308778228.jpg

This is your first?? I think that's very, very good for a first time try!!!

Thank you very much!!!

BTW, does a dip pen count as a fountain pen?

I was wondering about that too. My entry is dip pen. :ninja:

It sure is nice though.... like WoW! Thank you!

Hy folks,

my try is just for fun. It can not mess with the rest but it is something different and took only a few minutes.

So far I think everything is quite wonderful. I am thinking that judging might consider extra points for actual Fountain Pen without ruling out the dip pens. You guys are just too good to "rule" out. Fair enough?

Also I appreciate the full membership voting suggestion. Still giving it some thought, but really want to announce the winners as part of the 4th of July weekend fun.

Pleas keep up the lovely work. We are all enjoying every entry. thumbup.gif Thank you! ~ Pendleton

Here's my entry. I originally did this as a practice version, but I liked it. :)

I have neither much experience or much supplies for calligraphy. I created this on watercolor paper. I used: A Lamy 1.1 italic (not really broad or sharp enough for this sort of thing, with a Lamy Black cartridge. A Pilot Falcon with a Black Falcon Cartridge. A Pilot VP with Noodler's Black for the detailed work.

After I scanned the image, I printed it onto parchment paper, touch it up in Photoshop (the scanner wasn't great) and voila!

Also, I added the color on the computer, because I don't have any red or yellow ink.

If you are interested, I can post the original white one, but his looks nicer (I think.)

Original B&W scan (the scanner washes out the black ink, makes it look faded):

All things considered, I love your creativity thumbup.gif Thank you for being open about the Photoshop. I think what we will do is "consider" it in the judging as we are also considering other various pens. Kind of like ice skating competitions, the judges will give everyone points for various things according to the book I wrote on judging such things. Each judge has a copy. Here it is in its entirety:

How to Judge a Penmanship Contest

for those like me who don't know scrap about such things

by Pendleton happyberet.gif

Capter: The First ( and The First shall be last)

1) Look at them each and check for and adherence to rules. Rules are bendable but add more points if all are obeyed.

2) Then give them a 1- 100 score on each of the following criteria:

> gut feel, i.e., how it strikes you (1-100)

>actual expertise of craft (1-100)

> creativity ~ use of color, picture, material, (1-100)

3) Add up the points. Highest total wins. By using "100" as a high rather than 10, ties should not occur.

Don't think software should be used to enhance/change what's written for this contest. I agree ... think it would be cheating since this is about penmanship, not software and wouldn't it be a rather unfair advantage over those of us who don't have Photoshop or other software?

I agree...maybe limiting entries to just scanning or taking a picture would be a good thing as this contest is supposed to be about skill with the pen, not computer.

 Okay.

If I have time, I'll get some colored ink and maybe a broader italic nib, and make a 100% natural version. Anyway I really wanted to improve the quality of the calligraphy.

I'll also try taking a picture instead of scanning. I wasn't so happy with how it came out in the scanner. It made the ink light and any smears dark!

(By the way, the black and white version is a "natural" scan.

My second entry...

PIP is Brause dip pen with "Blue Pumpkin" nib, Speedball super pigmented acrylic silver ink, and pale pink Strathmore parchment paper.

My camera is pretty bad :crybaby: ...so the paper is pink, not yellow, and the ink is much more glittery than it looks. Also, somehow it looks crooked in this picture.

I absolutely loved your work - all three of them! Please don't be disheartened by the rules.

Thanks. But I went out and bought some yellow (sheaffer cartridge) and red (manuscript cartridge) inks. There is no real FP store near me, so I had to use these calligraphy inks.

Red was applied with a Manuscript F italic pen, and the Yellow was applied with a Pilot 78g. I had to suck the yellow ink out of the cartridge with a syringe and inject it into the squeeze fill converter of the 78g. After using it, I flushed the pen immediately, because these are not very fountain pen friendly inks.

Oh, and the dot of blue in the peace sign is Bay State Blue from a Pilot VP F.

This is now a 100% "all natural" scan of my original work using only fountain pens!

(I'll see if I have time to make a complete redo.)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
