OK, no chance of winning; I'm no calligrapher, but someone's got to be the first, so maybe I'll get half a mark for that!

fpn_1308473518__psalm_contest_lores.jpg

Can I have another go later - if I practise a bit more?

PS Lamy Joy, Herbin 1670 and Aurora black inks.

This is very nice and as someone else mentioned quite fluid. I think this hand will look great on the same background with a dark brown shading ink like MB Toffee Brown or similar. Looking forward to the next one.

Aha - I was expecting a Copperplate entry from you. A lovely choice of ink as usual.

I have neither the equipment to give great results, nor the hand worthy of it. But here's my scrawl on the first clear page of my journal using the Spirit of Life IB nib and PR Spearmint ink.

This is a nice mature hand - now I know I should've asked for an IB on the SOL instead of the IF

My first entry... :bunny01:

Pilot Varsity with italicized nib and Diamine Steel Blue. Paper is Clairefontaine dotted.

(I'm not much good at uploading images, so I'm sorry if the image is too big.)

Nice choice of hand and ink. I was thinking of trying this challenge in blue myself.

Scrumptious Soki! :happyberet: Care to share PIP ( pen, ink, paper)?

Glad you clarified what you meant by PIP :roflmho: I was thinking "Why does Pendleton want to know about proximal inter-phalangeal?!"

I used an oblique penholder, Brause rose nib and ink was Penman Liquid Gouache - mix of Copper Green and Brilliant Yellow. Not sure about the paper - just some random sheet lying around

Thanks for starting this comp, Pendleton!

I might try my hand at other styles.

.............. What paper did you use?

Regards,

I have quite a stock of textured backgrounds in my computer; I printed one out on ordinary copy paper and wrote on that. Sometimes the ink takes well and does interesting things, sometimes not.

Sincerely, beak.

I just know I am not good enough to win, so just out of curiosity how much is that pen if I were to buy it ? Looks really nice.

I like the message highlighted in the verse: "My heart is a good thing which I have made ready." Lovely, beak.

You could have told me it was a goat skin djembe head. happyberet.gif Looks cool. I reallly like the red and black and the "red letter" message. Thanks for pointing that out Lisa thumbup.gif I had missed it. I'm gonna have to freshen up on my Nancy Drew.

Here's mine! Thanks to a Latinist friend of mine, I was able to find the correct passage in the Latin Vulgate. It was fun to do calligraphy again after a few months of no practise! I should work on decorating, though - I generally have no idea what to do for decorations!

There is some slight feathering, but it was the only blank paper I had that wasn't cheap copier paper.

Pretty! Certainly easy on the eye, but I wonder if that's conditioning from reading similar typeset in printed works :hmm1: And since most of us are now accustomed to certain fonts, how could we prove or disprove this theory?

Time for me to chime in. Unfortunately there was a little feathering on some parts of the leaf. I had a better leaf done up, but spelled "swiftly" wrong, so had to trash it. :headsmack:

This contest gave me some neat ideas! Wondering if its allowed to have multiple entries? May do up one on actual paper heh.

Wow - the bar is definitely being raised here.

Swavey - what a lovely idea to do calligraphy on a leaf.

Edited to add: Try spraying the leaf lightly with hairspray, it might help with the feathering.

Thanks! :)

It certainly is possible that we're influenced by fonts we see on a regular basis. However, for me, I often find unfamiliar fonts to be prettier or more eye-catching than the ones I'm used to.

I recall seeing a video where a teacher spoke about a teenaged student who could not understand cursive writing. The student could only read and understand printed words, because he had never been taught the cursive alphabet. Maybe we could get students like him to participate in a study on fonts? :P

Wow! That raised the bar too high for me...I'm out. I would vote this first place so far.

Absolutely, multiple entries allowed thumbup.gifthumbup.gif ... in this case I'm thinking more is better! Gotta love the leaf! But..... If I decide to choose the winner by popular vote (which I am thinking would be a good way to go) ... only one vote per person. :) Any thoughts?

REMINDER: One of the very few rules (in the opening post) is to use a fountain pen. After all, we are the Fountain Pen Network. :) If that is too stupid, let me know and I'll throw that rule out, but I kinda' like it.
