FPN'r hari and I agree and have been arguing this point for years....

Tend to agree with you here, but I am far from being an expert.

Also, I do not have a macro lens, so sorry there are no close-up pictures, but In the eventuality that this information is of use to the specialists among us:

I have one 146, purchased new in France,1987, with a 18C nib, split ebonite feed, grey window, flared section collar and only 'Germany' on the clip. I purchased this pen (from the busiest local retailer in 1987) and doubt very much that it was old stock. They were the busiest sellers locally, but obviously I cannot be 100% certain that its purchase date corresponds to its date of manufacture.

I have another 146, purchased in the UK, (date unknown), with a slightly narrower shouldered (than above) 14K nib, exact same split ebonite feed and grey window, but with a raised non-flared collar and also with only 'Germany' on the clip.

The engravings on the cap bands are identical.

I admit to having difficulty dating the UK version. I suspect the early 1980s.

BTW, both write superbly, but one belongs to the wife (and best friend)..... :crybaby: sniff!

Shouldn't it be monochrome, not monotone? And the same with duo-? Unless, of course, it's a loud color.

I thought an average picture would be better than no picture at all...

So, sorry about the quality, but here are the two 146 pens I mentioned above. The (suspected early 1980s) 14K with the older non- flared section collar is on the left (inked with IG MB Midnight Blue). The 1987 18C pen with the modern-flared section collar is on the right.

I have a 146 imprint on my early model Fountain Pen followed by 888 . Do you have any idea what this is?

... are you sure it's 888 and not BBB?

It would help to see a picture.

You love this 146, don't you? And no, it's not a fake.

Thank you for this outstanding presentation on the MB146. This has to be the best posting I've come across in my fountain pen education. It highlights the important distinctions, supported by great photographs. After having read this, it gave me the confidence to buy a 146 from in internet seller, and I've been delighted with the pen. Thanks again.

Have we lost these photos and thus a valuable resource?

Infuriatingly so.

This is happening on forums and websites across the internet, since photobucket decided to charge ($399 pa) for third-party hosting. I'm not sure how we can rectify it on old threads like this, which are well past their edit date.

It's a shame, I always enjoyed this thread.

Just to let you know about how I will proceed from here:

I plan on updating the article in the near future either with the original images (I still have them) or maybe even with new ones.

This and an update as well as additions to my article about the 149 pens are in progress to be published in my blog.

But I will put a link here as well.

Cheers

Michael

This post was like a pilgrimage for fans of vintage MB 146! I hope you manage to get the pics back up.

In the meantime I have two questions for vintage 146 collectors:

1. Did the earliest 146 come with a friction fit nib/feed/section arrangement, instead of the screw-in nib? I have a 146G with the long ink window that I believe would make it one of the earlier models. It does not have a screw in nib. The section perfectly screws into the barrel and all looks right, so I don't have reason to believe that the section is incorrect? But, I am curious to hear your views.

2. I have heard about how the earliest 146s have a different clip - something about how there is a hole at the joint between the clip and its ring on the crown. Does anyone have a picture to demonstrate?

Thanks!

1. Yes

2. No time take a pic of my early 146 but you can check out one here:

Hope this helps!

Ah, I see now! Thanks for the pic! Mine looks like this pen except for the clip opening. Thanks
