Need Some Waterproof Inks

Zenas

Recommended Posts

Here is the situation. I practice law and need some waterproof inks in Blue, Dark Blue, and Black. I presently love and enjoy my Waterman Florida Blue, Waterman Blue-Black, and Waterman Black, however, they are not waterproof. I would really prefer these waterproof inks that I am seeking to behave as well as the Waterman inks do in my pens. Furthermore, I have yet to find a dark enough blue I like that isn't either "tealish" or "grayish" --- I would really like a very dark navy that is almost black. So what waterproof inks will approximate the Waterman Fla. Blue, and a very dark navy almost black in color, and a dark, dark black?

I am about to turn in for the evening, but will attempt to check the post ever few days to see what my fellow pen nuts aficionados have suggested. Sleep well friends.

Blue

Noodler's Luxury Blue

Pilot Blue - good blue and doesn't dry to look washed out, and very much waterproof. Currently testing it out and so far in 3+ months of bright sunlight it's been pretty UV proof as well.

Blue-Black

Lamy Blue Black (Iron Gall)

Noodler's Ellis Island

Noodler's Manhattan Blue

Mountblanc Midnight Blue

Sailor Sei Buko - a very slight greenish tinge though

Black

Noodler's Bulletproof Black

Excellent. All of these are waterproof? Which one is the darkest almost black navy blue?

Yep they are all waterproof/very water resistant (maybe slight smudge) I have tested them all myself.

As for the darkest Navy Blue - Manhattan and MB midnight would be pretty close (at least by my testing) - you can have a look at some reviews and decide for yourself.

I'm a fan of Noodler's waterproof blue inks but generally find them "tealish." I just started using Platinum Pigment Blue and it's a non-tealish.

I haven't used the Pigment Blue, but I just bought my second bottle of Carbon Black from Platinum and it is hands down the best black ink I have ever tried. Insanely smooth, good dry time, waterproof/fadeproof/etc. I lost a pen with a half-fill of the pigment black, and it was clogged when I found it. However, after about ten minutes soaking and some cycling with water it ran clear again and worked just fine. Excellent, excellent ink.

I just bought a whole heap of ink samples from the Goulets for the sole purpose of finding myself a nice waterproof blue.

Tried Noodler's luxury blue, bad belted king fisher and bad blue heron - Not very fond of their colours.

I settled for Iroshizuku's in the end. Not waterproof but somewhat water resistant..........

Diamine Registrar's Ink is superior ink, I think. It goes on light, then dries to a grayish dark blue that will eventually oxidize to a very dark blue/black. It's completely waterproof, too.

AND CHEAP.

I also need waterproof ink in my profession.

I currently used Montblanc Blue-Black (renamed Midnight Blue now) and Rohrer and Klingner Salix (Blue-Blackish) ink. They are both excellent inks and will not fail you. Both of these inks are Iron gall inks. Just to spice up your life you might want to try the R&K Scabiosa (Purplish-black) ink that is also an I-G ink that is suitable for professional use.

I practice law too. The inks I use depend on what kind of documents are involved.

For something that must be absolutely fraud-proof like checks or contracts, Noodlers Bulletproof Black. Noodlers Luxury Blue is called "Eternal" and is near bullet-proof, definitely water-proof. It is a medium blue but appears chalky on some papers and not my favorite.

I also use Legal Lapis for checks sometimes. Some people describe it as blue-black. To my eye, it looks more green-black.

For court pleadings, I usually use something that is merely water resistant. I find it hard to imagine someone sneaking into the courthouse with chemicals to obliterate a date or my signature from some document in the court file, although I guess anything is possible.

The Pilot-Namiki black and blue are fairly water resistant, although I think a bit drier than Waterman. The blue is a true light to medium blue. I haven't yet tried mixing the two to make my own blue-black. Sometimes they feather a little on cheap copy paper.

Lately I have been using Herbin Blue Nuit which is a medium dark blue. Herbin makes a black called Perle Noir. The Herbin inks are close in behavior to Waterman but more water resistant.

I believe that Diamine Registrar Ink is the darkest blue, followed by Mont Blanc midnight blue, a really dark purply blue.

I have used Pelikan Black which is somewhat water resistant and Parker Quink which is no more water resistant that Waterman. I am especially fond of Aurora black for personal notes but I don't buy it for its water resistance so much as for how black the ink is on the page.

Noodlers blue-black would fit the bill for your dark blue. Pilot blue is waterproof but kinda bright. For a black, tough to beat noodlers bulletproof black.

I really appreciate all the assistance with my waterproof ink issues. I am also particularly grateful for the dark, dark, navy almost black blue suggestions that are waterproof --- any further suggestions are welcome. Several of the on screen reviews differ from when I actually apply the inks in my pens on my cheap paper that is one of the reasons I ask you to tell me the actual color of the blue as I want to avoid any tealish hew or grayish wash.

My Manhattan Blue isn't water resistant. There's a greenish component that is and leaves a legible shadow, but the blue part smears and washes away easily. Perhaps you meant Legal Blue (Art Brown) or Legal Lapis (Pendemonium).

Noodler's bad mocassin (black bulletproof and laserproof)

Careful about this one, I tried it and when you apply water to it a lot of smears + runs, so if you are using it in a situation where it might come into contact with other items you should probably avoid this one.

All very good and appreciated and I have already begun my purchase list of several suggestions. I also like noting those suggestions that appear more than once. However, to thicken the plot. I live in the deep south of the United States where rain, sweaty hands and arms and the like come in contact with paper along with the nearly insufferable humidity (makes you want to live here uh?). Consequently, it is not unusually for my handwritten court notes, papers, or whatever to get wet on the way to where I will be using them. I generally write on cheap legal pads --- many times yellow ones (there is a reason for this that I will not go into now as it is probably boring anyway). Anyway, I like the visibility of black (as I use notes during public speaking sometimes), but the federal courts and contracts need blue. Therefore, I am looking for that magical end all dark, dark blue (without teal or grayish hews) that is nearly black to be able to sign contracts yet take notes that are as nearly contrasting as black --- all the while being waterproof. I am attempting to stay away from any unusually tented blues other than it is DARK. I also want the ink to be better behaved than I am.

You ladies and gents have been already been a wealth of help and I know I am probably wearing this thread out, but you know how it is when you get your mind set on what you think you want.

Cheers,

Z

I use a lot of Regisrar's ink, which dries to a very dark blue tinged black. I get mine in 100ml bottled from this site:

http://www.registrar...strars_ink.html

This is quite cheap at £7.50 a bottle, but that price advantage may be lost if it had to be shipped across the Atlantic. But I think this stuff is identical to Diamine Registrar's ink which I believe is easily available in the USA.

Bad belted Kingfisher also is not stable under water as Noodler's Black bulletproof. I tested both doing the census. I left yellow visit card and passed the next day. Some got under rain for a full night (no mailbox I can access). Noodler Black did not even move an atoms. Bad Belted Kingfisher was still really readable but you see it was in contact with water.

But it is a really dark blue. I use it for signing and for other use where blue is better then black. Like when I sign an Oath as commissioner. That way, you can tell if it is original or not and still, it is dark enough for doing good photocopy.
