Pelikan Blue Black Discontinued In The U. S.

After having read this thread, I went out to buy some Pelikan blue-black ink. I looked at two stores, couldn't find any, though the Royal Blue and Brilliant Black were available in plenty. Very curious.

Got three bottles from "Müller Drogeriemarkt" last Friday. If there is one in Aachen, it might be worth a try.

I bought some yesterday, given the fact that cartridges are sold at the same price of Royal Blue ones, hence it is one of the cheapest inks here. Now I have 4 boxes (10 x 6 cartridges) each in the basement.

With 240 cartridges, I am OK at least for the next weekend. :roflmho:

What happens if you mix Pelikan blue with Pelikan black, do you get a reasonable facsimile of their blue-black?

Short answer: no.

Long answer: I have tried this with Pelikan and with Waterman inks. The result is horrible rather boring. It is not a blueblack but some strange colour that is lacking the blue completely.

As I mentioned a few pages back in this thread, I've found that a 6:1 mix of Pelikan Royal Blue and Sheaffer black to be quite nice. Here's a sample:

Thanks for the tip. Yesterday, I came back with a bottle of Lamy blue-black. It's okay but I like the Pelikan variety better.

of all the colors pelikan has, they decide to discontinue a classic? i'll never understand ANY company...it seems like so many companies have GREAT products, and then they discontinue them and produce something that is not as good...

You said it. I love the silvery-denim tone I get with Pel BB---there's no other like it.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

It seems like some enterprising European FPN-er should start a smuggling operation to supply those of us in the US with this ink. Ideally, this plan should involve secret decoder rings. And fedoras. Fedoras for everyone.

Would that be a blue fedora or black? Or maybe in between?

I spotted some bottles of Pelikan Blue Black in our local Department Store yesterday so panic bought a couple just in case supplies start to run short in the UK

I was reassured that UK and rest of Europe would be OK but I confess I bought a couple myself - just in case. I'm more likely to spill it by mistake than use it all up though!

This is an ink that I can't imagine being without - it's the ink that plays nicest in my wet m800, and it's the only ink I used in my Rhodia webbie research notebook because of the ink's fast-drying properties. So, I was relieved to have snagged four of the 62.5 ml bottles from an Amazon seller when I heard the news. That should keep me writing for some time to come!

  • 9 months later...

UK update - I got another bottle a couple of weeks ago and it's still going strong over here.

I can only find older bottles of Pelikan BB here. I'm not sure if Pelikan is bringing in BB in the new bottles (although the local Pelikan office has assured me that BB is not discontinued). Plenty of Royal Blue and Brilliant Black all around.

However I can't quite get myself to like Pelikan BB now. It looks more of a gray-black rather than a blue-black and feels 'sticky' in my pens.

It's still going strong here, too. I looked through the above 3 pages of posts but didn't see what I was looking for.

The question/statement/fear in this thread has appeared here on the site a lot lately (for a good reason). In an older thread it had already been said that this ink is, yes, still available here in Europe, but not in the States. That was what my phone call to Hannover raked out. I believed them, but others may not. I subsequently shot off to a few stores and bought a few bottles. It's still available today, and, I don't see any chemical (e.g. wetness/lubrication) or physical (e.g. optical) differences among any of the bottles of this ink which I bought.

Another thread here (which I can't find) also stated that {A} the formulation had by no means changed but that it was not to be sold in the States due to some FDA or similar decrees. Some members rebuked on that, that I should even mention the name FDA in all openness but there we have it, and that was advocated later too by others, notably from the States too (I think). {B} Then there was the debate that Europe might not or should not cough it out because Europe's FDA is said to be much more stringent the the US's. But maybe it's the other way around after all. {C} Pelikan also told me that this ink has zero IG in it since about 25 years now. And that too has also been negated -- and/or deplored -- by many of us. To be honest, (however crude), I'm not all that interested in whose FDA is who, if it has in fact been indistinguishably altered, or how much IG there is in the whole ink (or just in the black component), I just want the ink.

... So, if you love this ink as much as I do, then either smuggle some in or move to Europe. :glare:

But don't try and exchange it for Noodler's, if you don't mind.

No problem - it's just that I don't want to part with the 4001 I've amassed. Finally I've worked out a way of being able to use it in the car fuel tank too. Well, we're always being told to be greener - now I'm bluer!

Whether you like this ink or not, think about your wallet:

For those of you in need and/or for those of you who are planning on a big vacation…....

….... for the sake of comparison: missing-pen ink prices per ml, March 2012.

Achtung: these are all prices in Germany, today, including 19% sales tax.

Okay, okay… for a better Noodler's price all we have to do is move from Berlin (or Shropshire) to the States.

Bon Voyage!
