"cool" Pens (Bp And Fp)

One of the pens I've always thought was really 'cool' was the ST Dupont Vertigo.

A few years after they stopped making the Vertigo they brought out the Vertigo 2. Usually the second edition of a theme doesn't work as well as the first one but in this case I think ST Dupont did a pretty good job of maintaining the feel of the design while subtly changing it.

 

The Vertigo 2 is on the left in this picture.

David Oscarson's Valhalla Series in gray Thor livery:

Turned from a solid block of English hallmarked Sterling Silver, and deeply engraved with bas relief guilloche showing a Viking Longboat and the Midgard Serpent, and a script found on ancient European Rune Stones (which when translated, encourages brevity). Coated with layer upon layer of gleamining translucent cold enameling. The clip is a solid sterling Mjolnir - the magic Hammer of Thor. The 1.1 mm Binder Cursive Italic nib is the smoothest and wettest in my small stable - liquid penmanship. Handsome, artisan crafted, a great backstory, and muted enough to work as a dress pen or as an everyday pen. It's clipped to my shirt placket right now.

 

And with the thoroughly entertaining and visually stunning 3D movie in summer release, David Oscarson's Thor is Epic Cool, and all kinds of Awesome.

Parker 50 Falcon - maligned by some as the cap does leave marks on the business end of the pen, but hey, it's a pen. This one was in my rotation last week. It's a mat finish metallic cocoa. Always a pleasure having it in my pen case for a week,

Crafted from rich briarood celluloid and trimmed with ten spiraling sterling silver bars embedded into the celluloid. Designed with precise dimensions to commemorate Phi, the numerical representation of the Golden Ratio 1.618... (NOT Pi which is 3.14...).

 

Engraved upon the Divina Proporzione's filling plunger is the Fibonacci Sequence, a mathematical expression of Phi.

The Fibonacci Sequence is a sequence of positive integers, each Fibonacci number being the sum of the preceeding two numbers:

 

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987...

 

The ratios of the early numbers to their immediate predecessor roughly approximates Phi. Phi is an irrational never ending number: Phi = [1 + (Square Root of 5)] / 2 = 1.6180339887... :

 

13/8 = 1.625

 

What's spooky cool is that as the sequence progresses, the ratios of higher and higher numbers asymptotically approach Phi more and more accurately:

 

34/21 = 1.619048

987/ 610 = 1.618032

The spiraling five sided barrel and cap of the pen refer to Phi's relationship to the Fibonacci Sequence and the natural spirals it describes. Phi occurs with startling frequency in nature, and seems to be involved in how humans perceive beauty. Phi may also be encoded in evolutionary biology as the Golden Ratio is frequently evident across phyla and kingdoms. As part of the Divina Proporzione's LE Presentation, a large Phi Caliper was included, adjustable to measure the Golden Ratio in different sizes. You can amuse and annoy your friends by objectively measuring their adherence to (and deviations from) the classical standards of beauty.

Of course, all things mystical and cool have to eventually involve the Egyptian Pyramids. In 1859, John Taylor argued in his book, "The Great Pyramid", that the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza was built to Phi proportions. The length of the face slope (186.4 meters) divided by half the length of the side of the square base (115.2 meters) yields Phi to an accuracy beyond the significant figures of the original measurements. This appears to be correct despite our current belief that the ancient Egyptians' mathematics would not have been able to conceptualize irrational (never-ending) numbers like Phi. We currently believe their knowledge of geometry would have only allowed them to build a 3x4x5 ratio pyramid, not one to Phi proportions.

I do love a great pen with an interesting backstory. Makes for better patter when people ask about the pen I pull from my jacket.

Visconti's Divina Proporzione is my favorite carry for arts and science events. I like the pen so much I own three - two with spiraling sterling bars, and a dressier version with 18k yellow gold spiraling bars. I carry a matching twist ballpoint because I'm unwilling to surrender the fountain pen to the uninitiated.

Thank you for reply. Don't you worry about the red ribbons to be damaged? I almost ink my pens, but it is hard to decide to write with. I put the samourai in a soft Nakaya kimono when carrying it. What is the nib size of yours and how do you protect and carry the huge president version samourai ?

 

I dont carry it around :) too big to carry, and no clip... I keep it on my desk. Yes, I worry about the ribbons, but you only live once and I would rather have used it for 5 years, and stain it, than never used it never stained it... Its too nice of pen for me not to use...

I think you are much more open minded. I should learn from you. But I still decide to carry the two samourais with me even I travel to Kyoto, Japan next month. The ancient Japanese samourais always carry two swords.
