Wow, I just needed to chime in as soon as I came back from some errands: this isn't me! I just did a Google image search a while back, something like "many ink bottles" and found that! I've got, like 7, and about 10 samples.

 

No, I'd be booted out of the house if it ever got to that level...

I completely agree. Since I began keeping an ink journal six months ago. I've discovered I primarily use four or five colors while a bunch of other occasionally make a guest appearance.

Those are some photos. Wow. I admire the collections! And it's reassuring to see that I have a long way to go before anyone would say I had too many inks.

 

But to answer the original question, I find that I regularly use about 8 of the 30+ bottles I have. I usually have my favorite 3 or 4 loaded in multiple pens, and then the other four inks are loaded in single pens.

 

Depends how much you like variety. Some people are quite happy with 2 or 3 inks...but anyone who spends time on Inky Thoughts are probably more than a little devoted to inks!

I need two inks: one black and one blue. It is because regulations ask for black writing and others ask for blue writing.

For work I need black or blue ink. Still, blue leaves a fairly wide range of shades, and I try to vary it some, as the same blue gets to be too boring for me.

 

At home, no limits. I am very fond of turquoise (think old sheaffer's peacock- that was always my favorite color in school) so one of my first bottles was of Noodler's Eel turquoise. For drawing, I like black or brown, so I just picked up a black(ish) and a brown. Other colors I just plain like. I really like anything that shades deeply- so I had to have Black Swan in Australian Roses. It's lovely,and I keep it in at least one pen. Black Magic Blue was just too cool not to have, and though it has purple shades, it's still blue enough and dark enough for work. I still would like to add more blues to the list. I don't yet have a blue-black other than my vintage Sheaffer's that I'd rather not use. A navy or midnight blue would also be nice.

 

Then there are the wants... I'd like a nice red or other vivid color (Habanero?) for marking up my husband's students' papers. I don't teach any more (social work now) but somehow I still do a great deal of grading. Even a vivid green or purple would do. I don't know, I just like inks. When I was in school and used the old Sheaffer school pens and cartridges, I rotated colors pretty regularly. The only off limits color was red because of grading. So Peacock, Lavender, Blue-black, Emerald and Brown were all reguarly used. Skrip Blue was used occasionally and I never used the black. It was too "blah".

 

I love seeing the ink collections. The vintage one is just.... wow... amazing. I'd love to look through some of those vintage bottles!!

 

Paperskater, I love your shelf! That's a nice assortment and so neatly organized! My inks have yet to find a nice "home" on a particular shelf.

The best red (IMHO) is Nikita from Noodler's. A bright fire engine red. I use it for grading a lot.

 

A blue that I use to change colors is Legal Lapis (I think most folks who like turquoise like this one, though it is not turquoise).

 

Some really nice dark blues are: Noodler's Ottoman Azure and Diamine Kensington Blue.

 

I have not used it, but I have never heard a bad word about Waterman Blue-Black. I don't own a blue black, but instead mix my own. I start with Waterman South Sea Blue or Sheaffer Skrip Turquoise and add Noodler's Heart of Darkness until it fits my mood. I do this in a sample vial so that I can get one fill and be done.

 

You can never have too many inks, although I am not nearly as well stocked as the pictures in this thread

I have had to postpone my otherwise semi-monthly trips to Japan since the disaster, so I am running a bit lower than I line. Fortunately, travel-restrictions have justbeen lifted, and I have a few priority matters to deal with in the greater Tokyo area, so I am planing a big import of Iroshizuku to replenish my stock

I only have 7 inks so far, and am head over heels in love with three of them. Clearly this is not enough :-)

I have lost the urge to acquire more ink bottles. I think it's practical to buy only the colors you can really use on a regular basis (unless, like paperskater, I can share my extras with others by way of samples). I do still have other colors I want to try, but samples will be the way to go, esp. for colors that are nice to have but I know will hardly ever get used.

Skrip Blue was used occasionally and I never used the black. It was too "blah".

When I was a teenager using those old Sheaffer cartridge fountain pens I longed for Jet Black ink in a cartridge. All we could get was that washable blue and Blue/Black. Eventually I was able to score Sheaffer's Skrip Jet Black in cartridges, and I was so thrilled.

 

Sheaffer Skrip Blue/Black ink was just the ink that was always all around. All of the candy stores sold it. I wanted a black ink because it looked more like the old manuscripts I'd seen. So now I've got a lot of black ink, mostly Noodler's Black. but I still have a bottle or so of Skrip Jet Black and some mostly dried out cartridges of Skrip Jet Black. I also have a lot of Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black, some Visconti Black, Monteverde Black and, ugh, Quink Black.

 

I'm trying to remember if I ever mixed up some Noodler's Black with some Skrip Jet black. If not I might try that one soon.

I have a bunch of samples waiting for me to try them, so I may already have what I'm seeking.

 

I guess what I really want is a bulletproof version of Parker Quink Permanent Blue.
