Hey Fpn; Some Vintage Celluloid Pens

Recommended Posts

I have some nice vintage pen on offer - Italian, German and American.

First up is Ancora 87. I recently got this pen from wonderful Sbroglia here on FPN. It sports a perfect Italian design which is culmination of the best design features from all over the world. Be it the soldier clip or the celluloid cap jewel over the metal cap. Also Consider the innovative hybrid filling mechanism which is a combination of piston filler and vacumatic filler. The orange ringed celluloid barrel has great transparency. It has a decent size 14K nib which writes a fine line with a hint of spring to it. The pen is in great shape without any cracks or scratches but the clip does show some brassing.

Next up is Omas Minerva 60 in beautiful grey pearled celluloid. This one is accompanied by a outer cardpaper box and the inner hard case. It was new old stock when I got it and I must have filled it, maybe once or twice to try it. It is a piston filler and is fully operational. It has the original Minerva 14k nib which is a pleasure to write with - see the writing sample.

I have 3-4 more pens to list so please watch this space.

Up next is a hefty Italstilo Italian piston filler in deco silverray celluloid. The barrel has good transparency and comes with a fresh cork seal installed. Both ends of the pen feature a stepped design. The arrow clip and the 3 cap ring complete the macho look of the pen. There is brassing on the clip and cap rings which add some character to the pen. The main barrel imprint "Italstilo" is crisp but the lower line is faded. Coming to the best part of the pen which is the big nib. It features a flexible 14K 1.1mm nib tipped by Mr.Minuskin; see the writing sample below. The disclaimer on this nib are a couple of hairline cracks around the breather hole.

The above writing sample hints to the next pen - A Tabo V Junior; Italian piston filler in nice burgundy celluloid. The barrel has good transparency with amber colored ringed ink window. This pen is also laden with small details from the stepped metal cap-top and the ornate clip and cap ring to the cool knurled piston turning knob. Now the Pièce de résistance - the long slender tines on the 14K F nib. It is a very capable nib which can go from F to BBB. It comes with the hard case box which has seen better days.

Next is another Italian - Radius Comet in green arco celluloid. This one was also NOS when I procured it and have used it maybe 5 times. The arco is quite translucent near the ink window as seen in the pictures. It has a clear ink window and the piston filler mechanism is fully operational. It comes with hard case and papers. It has a nice semi-flexible 14K nib which can go from F to BB.

Price: $200 shipped within CONUS; international at cost.

Coming to a rare American brand - Chilton. Actually I still can't explain why I am putting this up for sale but here it is anyway - I may pull the listing if I can't justify it.

This particular specimen is from c.1928. I consider it to be in good shape given the age of the pen. One can see the discoloration of the celluloid but it still is a stunning piece of design. This is one of the biggest pens I have in my arsenal other than the Ford Patent pen. The pen is fully operational and has a smooth pneumatic filler. To fill the pen one extends the barrel and then restricts the vent hole on the barrel end. With the vent hole closed (by your finger) one slides the barrel down which in turn deflates the bladder within. At this point one submerges the writing end of the pen in the ink bottle and removes the finger of the vent hole. The bladder inflates thus charging ink into the pen.

Coming to the huge nib - a 14K medium nib which is springy - see the included writing sample. No chips or cracks; you can evaluate the overall condition of the pen from the pictures.

If I didn't already have a green one, I'd be there for your Minerva!

Lovely pens!

Thank you for your kind words....

I am mildly surprised by the less than expected response on the Ancora. This led me to doubt myself wondering if I had made a mistake in pricing. So I did a quick FPN search for recently sold Ancoras. Almost all of the vintage ones were sold by Sbroglia. I found two near identical listings for Ancora 87; 1 and 2

The second link is the one I bought for Euro 285. I wanted to clarify this as a potential buyer may do a similar search, looks at the 1st link and assumes I am trying to rip them off. The original price of $425 was the price I had paid for it. The price right now of $400 is actually less than what I paid for it. Maybe I am over analyzing it (I am INTJ :) ) and of course Sbroglia simply had better street cred but just wanted to get this off my chest whew...

One more mention - this particular Ancora 87 is the luxury (lusso) version of the one featured in link 1.

Have a good week-end guys and gals....

Wanted to share some detail on the Minerva 60 based on a question I received -

Please refer to the picture below. From left to right, the sample indicates increasing writing pressure. Left most being minimal pressure and right most being maximum.

That's actually one of the most most beautiful pens I have seen on the board. I wish I had the funds.
