The earlier "Brushed Stainless Steel" Sheaffer Targas actually were stainless steel. However, starting in 1989 Sheaffer switched them to brushed chrome over brass. It's really hard to tell the difference unless you know what to look for.

1. At the bottom end of the barrel, the stainless steel pens have a groove that is filled with black lacquer. The brushed chrome pens don't have this lacquer-filled groove, but have a metal plug in the end of the barrel. The plug may be either chrome- or gold-plated, to match the clip. This plug adds a little bit of length. A capped stainless steel full-size Targa is 135.67 mm in length (5 11/32 inches). The brushed chrome version is 138.0 mm (5 7/16 inches).

2. At the cap/barrel join, the stainless steel pens just have the two major parts meet with no trim. The brushed chrome pens have a very narrow polished ring at the join. (It's actually part of a connector and has the threads that the nib section screws into. The stainless steel pens had an inner plastic barrel and the threads were molded into the plastic.)

3. The stainless steel pens had a brushed stainless top ornament that matched the rest of the pen. The brushed chrome pens have a polished top ornament, either chrome or gold to match the clip.

4. When held side-by-side, the brushed chrome pens have a colder appearance than the brushed stainless steel pens. But it's very difficult to judge this if you just have one or the other to look at. Points 1 through 3 above are much better discriminators.

For everyday work and meeting use, I use mechanical pencils and BP pens. I write too hard and fast for FP's during meetings. As a result of some forums on both favorite BP's and Mechanical Pencils. I bought both a Parker Jotter in Stainless Steel and a Pentel Graphgear 1000. The Pentel, according to a review, is metallic with some aluminum. They both have been great. The Parker Ink refill is great.

Which got me to thinking about a FP in Stainless Steel. Do you have a favorite Stainless Steel FP? Do they make many?

I love my Lamy Vista in clear plastic and stainless steel chrome features, Cross Tech 4 and Cross Century II fountain pen in lustrous chrome and a med nib.

These are the three I tend to use the most out of my 24 fountain pens in my collection.
