I prefer Palomino Blackwing, tombow momo100 2b, Mitsubishi hi-uni 2b, palomino Blackwing 602, California republic palomino HB, vintage soft lead Eagle ppencils, and Staedtler Norico pencils. They write smoothly and with a good dark lead. The current run of Blackwarrior pencils just don't write as well as they used to. I look for those made in the U.S. For drawing I use any name brand more costly art pencil. I have pencil racks full of all manner of misc pencils. Sometimes I find no name pencils that write as good as any of the highest price pencil. If the line isn't fairly black and doesn't write smoothly I don't want it.

Maybe a silly question - is there a lot of smudging with the pencils mentioned above [when writing, or using both sides of a page, or when pages lie in a stack or file? Thanks.

The mechanical pencil is just the lead holder. Pick a comfortable one. 4B lead is very soft and very black. I speculate that it translates to "smooth".

.

I'm left handed and smudging does occur and it varies depending on the paper. If paper is stacked and doesn't move around much then smudging is minimal. I haven't seen much printing when using both sides of the paper. Anying I use my more expensive soft pencils for is considered a work in progress whether I'm using it for note taking and personal journals or filling out a form, a little smudging doesn't bother me. I simply like a smooth and dark line on the paper.

I've always liked the Mirado Black Warrior. Seems really smooth.

Some people claim the misubishi pencils are the best. Some others say it's the 'item 14' (or was it 12)

What do you think?

I just jotted down my expenses for today. Half the list with a USA made Papermate Mirado Black warrior 2hb and the latter half of the list with a Mitsubishi Hi-Uni 2B. No contest the Mitsubishi is smoother writing and with a darker line IMHO. Paper was a Moleskine cahier.

I don't know if I've mentioned before, but I really like Staedtler Wopex pencils. They are buttery smooth.

I'm a big fan of wood case pencils, especially the Palomino Blackwing with the gold ring. My second favorite for smoothness is the Blackwing Pearl. Both excellent pencils.

I've been trying out a lot--a whole lot of woodcased pencils recently and concur with most of what has been said. I always avoided pencils with softer grades of lead because of the smudging, but I'm happy to see that's it's less of a problem with the Blackwings and other high-quality models. I'll add the Mitsubishi 9850 HB as a smooth dark writer at a good price (directly from Japan--Jetpens also has them). The fit and finish is superb and I love the maroon color.

At a higher cost, Mitsubishi Hi-Uni's are excellent and in F and H grades offer very good smoothness with the firmness that I always liked. They are my "every-day pencils".
