Goulet Pens Sample Ink Vials!

Recommended Posts

The full review with pictures can be found here at my Blog!

Hello guys and gals! I just ordered some of these great little sample ink vials and I just had to do a mini review of them! They work extremely well at what they're made for. If you've been looking for a sample bottle to mix inks, or get the last drop out of your bottle then look no further than these! Let's get started then:

So here's the bottle. I have one empty one and one filled with Private Reserve Sherwood Green (an awesome color by the way!). They hold approx. 6 ml of ink when filled to the top.

The threads of the cap are very secure. Apparently, earlier versions of this bottle had a very small screw section on it making them less secure than this version.

The bottom of this vial is conical! This means you can suck the very last drops of ink out of this sample vial!

Really the only critique I could level against these awesome bottles is this: The mm markings (a very handy feature) can't be seen unless light reaches them from the backside of the bottle. This is mainly due to the fact that the marking are imprinted inside the bottles. Aside from that these bottle are a must have for any FP enthusiast!

I ordered mine from

Goulet Pens which I highly recommend you order from also. They have great prices and excellent customer service! With your bottles they also include sticker labels so you can label your inks!

Need a pen repaired or a nib re-ground? I'd love to help you out.

Great review! I like these little vials, too. They're great for ink-on-the-go. I usually keep some of my homemade inks in them, and then dip directly with a glass pen into the vial. They sell a holder for these vials also, though I don't have it yet.

Find my homemade ink recipes on my Flickr page here.

Yes, I saw the holder for the vials. Looks nice, but I don't have the space for it right now...

Glad you liked the review!

Thanks for the review! I love these vials too and use them for all of the filling of my pens in normal use. I shopped around quite a bit to find these, and they've been working great. One thing to note is that they are 1/2" in diameter at the opening, so they will fit just about any fountain pen directly into the vial.

Hey - these are great little vials!

- and they're good for storing spare nibs, too!

Among the things I just ordered (and received almost immediately) from Goulet Pens were 3 vials of test color ink. I looked and looked, could not find this sort of thing available anywhere else. The new(ish) line - Iroshizuko inks make you want to buy them, just for the lovely bottles. Thank goodness I saw the test vials available. The people at Goulet could not have been more helpful. The vials are indeed small and don't stand up. (These are test vials, not inkwells!)But, I think the idea is so great. I learned that my dip pens don't work very well (for me) with these FP inks. Now, 6 bottles of ink purchased would have left me kind of upset with myself. Now, only the three of the test vials, I can relax and play with the inks. and I still have some cool colors beyond my (newly expanding) collection of inks. thank you Goulet for providing these. I agree with comment that Goulet has great prices and wonderful customer service.

Lots and lots of happy Goulet customers here at FPN.

The little vials will stand up, but if you use them for dip pens, that's a little too much to ask of their narrow size. The next time you get a 6-pack of pudding or jello cups for the kids (of whatever age!), wash and save the little cups and use those to set an ink vial in. Much more stable. Plus you can use these cups to soak pen nibs, rinse out your dip pens between colors, yada, yada.

I recently ordered two samples from Goulet Pens in these vials. When I ordered ink, I also ordered some of these vials! Really great, aren't they? I'm going to use them to share some ink at the next pen club meeting.

These things are great! I purchased their vial holder as well, and that solves all the tipping problems. Another great thing about these vials is that they travel really well. It makes it easy to take some extra ink(s) along for short out of town trips. I'm a bit OCD about keeping my nibs, feeds and sections clean, so I syringe fill whenever possible. These vials allow you to use every last drop of ink due to their conical bottoms (very handy for Ink Drop or ordered samples as well).

I'm slowly amassing a collection of empties from the monthly Ink Drop shipments. As long as you use the Ink Drop samples in a timely manner, you'll have a constant stream of empty vials to use to your heart's content!

Collection Counts: Cross-4, Esterbrook-15, Eversharp-1, Graf von Faber-Castell-1, Jinhao-2, Kaweco-1, Lamy-6, Levenger-2, Monteverde-1, Pilot/Namiki-3, Noodler's-1, Parker-18, Rotring-10, Sailor-1, Sheaffer-19, TWSBI-1, Visconti-4, Waterford-1, Waterman-7

Favorite Inks: Diamine, Levenger, Private Reserve, Noodler's Lexington Gray

These are priceless. Well actually they are priced, but I just love them as a way to eliminate cross contamination. Use a disposable pipette to transfer sample, and keep your bottles tucked away. Here is a purple ink review I just did showing them in a rack. I find writing an abbreviation of the name on top makes it easier to find the one you want.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

Nice review but I'm going to play the contrarian here. No offense meant to those who swear by plastic vials but there are positives to glass ones, too. ;)

My ink collection includes more than 70 samples in plastic vials and at least 40 in glass vials. No leaks in shipment with the latter but more than a few with the former. Whether from pressure bending the plastic enough to form a leaky gap or the caps not seating well in the first place, the plastic vials aren't my preference.

More importantly the glass shows the ink color perfectly and seeing color is the main reason I buy or trade samples. Sometimes when there are two colors that are very similar, tilting the bottles to see a sheer coating of ink will reveal subtle differences. This isn't a necessity but it is helpful and beautiful as well.

On a lesser note, the clear glass bottles better reveal SITB should it happen. That doesn't occur often but it is something to be caught before contaminating a favorite pen.

The conical bottom might help get a little more out of the plastic vial but I'd wager without the section immersed, there will remain a nice fill of ink. Narrow-tipped pipettes will suck the last drop from any shaped bottle so you may still need a stock of them. They are handy for refilling cartridges and converters, too.

There is nothing wrong with plastic vials but I do prefer the glass ones. You should see the row of them across my desk, flashing their pretty colors. Okay. All that talk about ink has piqued my interest in testing a new one or maybe two. Simple pleasures, right?
