Using a dip pen gives this ink more density... really I just felt like getting out a bottle of port and posing a photo. :headsmack:

JBB, I assume you wrote that "Noodler's Antietam" with the dip pen in the picture. What nib is that? (I'm too much of a newbie with dip pens to recognize it.)

Thanks.

It's an Esterbrook 956. The holder is one of Engen21's. He posts on FPN and sells GORGEOUS dip pen holders on ebay.

I just ordered four wine colors from Goulet pens. I'm on the iPad, which does not multitasking, but I went by the recommendations y'all gave me. The Pilot ink looks like an early favorite to me!

Love, love, love Yama-budo. I use it at work, at home, every chance I get. It never gets old. I love the depth of color -- in my wetter nibs, it's a rich, sultry wine color, while in my EFs, it's a grape juice with ridiculous shading. You won't be disappointed!

Also, if you'd like a cartridge or two of MB Burgundy to test-drive, I'd be happy to share. :)

Thanks for the offer Meghan. I'm planning to order the MB Burgundy if the 4 I ordered don't work out, and that Yama-budo looks wonderful when it is just rubbed on a sheet of paper with a cotton swab and posted on the Internet.

The Goulets must be getting sick of me. I seem to order an ink or two every three days.

I must be missing something in all the Yama-Budo love. It is just too, too hot pink for me. I still need to try it in some other pens, but I don't ever drink any wines this color. (And I drink a fair variety of red wine. There's even a glass of it in my avatar!)

Diamine Syrah is my 100% favorite. I am also a fan of Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses - though that's the only burgundy/wine color from Noodler's that I like. I'd also vote R&K Alt Bordeaux, and even Diamine Oxblood.

Oh no! A little girlie-man color? I also ordered that annoyingly long Autrstralian Black Swan in the Red Roses color. I have the Syrah and like it but it is very dark with several of my nibs.

Thanks, JBB. It's not just the pen I admire, it's your handwriting skill, but the skill would be harder to buy....

Ahh, finally somebody who told the truth! I find the colour of Yama-Budo terrible. IMO it resembles my no means the colour of any red wine (at least the stuff I consume) but more of a fluorescent pink. Only thing I can think of here is a neon light of a pile of blaring lipstick.

My all time favorite dark red color is Noodler's Tainanmen. I see it as the red of dark red roses and I love it. I was looking for a color that was dark red without being pink, purple, or brown in color.

If you have a color that is close to what you have in mind, why don't you modify it. If you have a red you like but want it darker, take an empty vial and put 1 ml of red and then 1 or 2 drops of black or purple to darken it down. Shake it up and try it. That's what I did until I found my perfect dark red ink.

Anyways, I have samples to trade if you are interested.

Waterman Havana. While it is usually considered to be in the brown family, I have always thought it to be more of a plum color. "Dark wine" also describes it well.

Iroshizuku Yama-budo is one of my very favorite inks, but it may be pinker than what you are looking for. Same with Caran d'Ache Sunset.

R&K Alt-Bordeaux looks just like a delicious red wine. Binder's Burgundy (a.k.a. Diamine Syrah) is darker, but is a beautiful, well-behaved burgundy. Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses is similarly dark, but has eggplant undertones. Noodler's Tiananmen is a very pretty brick red, similar to Diamine Monaco Red, but I wouldn't really classify it as a wine-colored ink. Montblanc Bordeaux is too light for me, and is on the dry side, but it is a lovely color; I haven't tried the reformulated version.

My choice would be Alt-Bordeaux or Binder's Burgundy.

That has been my "everyday" brown for years. I'm on my fourth bottle of it. It is just reddish enough that it never looks greenish under any light.

I have a bottle of J Herbin Rouge Opera that I'll throw into the mix. The bottle is old - so I don't know if it is a current color / colour.
