Waterman Mechanical Pencils

So, about a year ago, I purchased a Waterman Carene Amber Shimmer fountain pen and pencil set. It was a steal, and I thought I'd just store the mechanical pencil out of sight and use the fountain pen. Boy, was I ever wrong. That mechanical pencil has become a daily user for underlining and writing in the margins of my books. I flippin love this pencil. It has the right weight, girth, and the pencil leads never break. Not once since I've been using it. I'm now terrified that I will run out of pencil leads and I honestly have no idea what size this mechanical pencil takes. So, two questions:

 

1) Does anyone else enjoy using a Waterman mechanical pencil, and if so, what model?

 

2) How do I determine the size of this pencil lead? Is it a special brand of pencil lead or can I buy it at Office Depot or Staples?

Hi Todd,

 

I am assuming it is a modern pencil, so it probably takes either a 0.5, 0.7 or 0.9mm lead. 0.3mm and 1.1mm are around as well, but they are not as common. 1.1 is mostly in older pencils, and 0.3mm is found mostly in Japanese pencils, like the Pentel Forte Pro-II that I have, or a Pentel P203. I would guess that it's probably a 0.7mm as that seems to be the most common in my experience for modern pencils. One way to check would be to try a 0.9, if it doesn't fit, keep going smaller until you find one that fits. I use Pentel Super Hi-Polymer lead in most every pencil I own, can be found at most stores here in the U.S. Perhaps someone more familiar with this particular pencil could give you an exact size so that you won't have to buy all of the different sizes just to end up with the right one.

My Waterman pencil uses .5 mm lead. The soft lead writes darker but it also breaks easier.

That is a problem with 0.5mm Don't know why so many pencils are now made to take 0.5mm even 0.7mm is better and doesn't break as easily.

You should try the extra strength Hi-Polymer leads.

I have two Waterman Expert pencils - a first generation and an Expert II. The Expert II has .5mm on the side of the lead chamber but the Expert I doesn't have anything. In comparing the two, the Expert I lead is visibly thicker leading me to believe that it might be a .7mm. Also, the mechanisms are noticeably different between the I and II. It looks as though you can unscrew the Expert I mechanism from the body of the pencil. I don't know the first thing about these so I have left the pencil in its currently fine operating condition for fear of turning a working pencil into a pretty piece of junk! Anyone know if the Expert II mechanism can be taken apart?

I have WM Carene MP. Size of lead has 0.5 stamped on the mechanism.

Hi i understand this is an old post but i am lookimg for the pencil to complete my set i have the Amber set only thing I need is the pencil can anyone help. Thanks so much

Referring back to this post, I have an Expert II pencil which is stamped 0.7 rather than 0.5, so it seems one had options; not that I knew it at the time.

Interesting topic...and one I contributed too.

 

While the catalogues list 0.5 & 0.7 leads there is nothing to indicate what size each model is/was available in. In fact it would appear the Carene pencil is no longer offered by Waterman.
