Identify This Sheaffer

Recommended Posts

I recently bought this Sheaffer at an Estate Sale for $12.50, and I would like to know more about it. I have never owned a Sheaffer and am rather excited about having my first one. If youcould help identify this pen and tell me more about the filling system etc. I would be most obliged.

EDIT: For your own entertainment the pen in my pocket is a Parker 61 that I inherited form my grandfather.

Hard to get specific but it is one of the Imperials. It is a touchdown filler. You don't have to open it as you are showing, there is an end cap that unscrews and a tube can be pulled out. Pull the tube all the way out, put nib in the ink (use water as a test) and push the tube all the way home. Count to ten and it should be filled. Tighten the end cap back down.

It was called a Touchdown filler and here are the instructions from Richard's Pens.

And here is a reference model list from SheafferTarga dot com.

Thanks so much! You have been so helpful. I just tested it with some water and it seemed to work fine.

Best Regards,

Jake

In my test run using only water I noticed that if I completely unscrew the section from the hood after filling it the metal tube is wet. Is this indicative of a bad seal or some other issue that needs to be addressed?

Yes. Water should not be getting out of the inner sac inside that tube.

Alright, thank you Jar. For $12.50 I think I've got some room in the budget for repairs. Once more thank you for your help.

I'd suggest wiping everything down and leaving it apart to dry. Preventing rust is a much better thing than dealing with it. You might consider doing the refit yourself, as it's one of the easier set-ups to fix-- I've got some directions here and you can get a one-pen kit from Martin's Pens (probably-- he offers Snorkel and PFM kits, but if you contact him and explain your need for a Touchdown set-up he'll likely put something together; he's a very reasonable chap).

$12.50... say, you paid the original MSRP!
