Caring For A Glass Dip Pen

Inky Zebra

Recommended Posts

My apologies if there is already a Glass Dip Pen thread. (Moderator, feel free to move this post if there is an existing thread.)

I have purchased a glass dip pen recently and am looking for tips in the care of my pen. Is there anything I need to do to prepare the pen and/or to maintain the pen?

Also, I am wanting to know how everyone is storing theirs.

Any thoughts (pro or con) would be welcomed.

Mine came with an inch of flexible plastic tubing that fits snugly on the tip. Somewhere I recently saw a mini-video that suggested that fine sandpaper could help remove scratchy places on the nib. I've got mine in my desktop pen box, where I can use it to sample new inks, with easy cleanup (moist paper towel).

I purchased mine with the idea of using it to sample new inks also.

Do you recall where you saw the video? Per chance was it on You Tube? I would definitely be interested in viewing it.

I purchased my glass dip pen from an FPN member, just shortly after joining FPN. In fact, I think it was my first purchase! Anyway, my glass pen came in a box, so I keep it there when I'm not using it. The box is kept in my pen case.

I have mine in a christmas tin that I lined with several layers of felt and it resides on my desk top. I also have one in a felt lined individual cigar box. I lined it with felt and covered it in a nice shellac with the intention of gifting it for christmas but liked it so much I kept it. I use a soft bristled tooth brush to clean the grooves in the glass nib if I am using gold or silver ink as they are hard to get off otherwise. Hope this helps

Found the video here: Brian Goulet has lots of very helpful little posts and videos about pens and inks; there's a list on the right side of the blog.

Excellent! That is the pen I purchased - J. Herbin Glass Pen.

Thanks so much!
