I dont think I can agree that any pen with gold trim is classy.

I'd go for a satin edison herald with silver (or better yet no) clip or a nakaya portable cigar. That sailor KOP goodguy posted looks bomber as well.

My Pelikan M805 in black is very classy and makes me smile when I think of it. :)

I have to take some time, one day and show the classic flat disks on the ends also. Rolled gold trim, Geha 725 mid '60s a wonderful semi-flex M.

The pen Geha chased MB with. Very sleek and balanced.A grail pen I never expected to own.

It goes into my solar powered pyramid with me.

If I were to make a choice for the "classiest" it would be the Aurora.

I love your picture of the Vac in Black...I use one daily and love it...

Everyone to their own. For me, though, black is boring. Colorize my life with green and blue and red and make it come to life with celluloid pearl depth.

I know everyone will have a different view of what "classy" is. For me, a classy pen is one that has simple styling and does not call attention to itself.

The ebonite Sailor KOP goodguy lists above meets my definition pretty well, though it may be too big (never seen one in person) to not draw too much attention.

For a similar look in a smaller form factor, there are pens by both Brian Gray and Edison Pens that fit the bill.

For vintage that I wouldn't stress too much about carrying around: Sheaffer Triumph or Snorkel, maybe the Vac (above.)

If I'm ignoring risk of loss, then it is easy: my LeBoeuf model 75. Love that pen.

Best Regards, greg

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

Its not expensive, and it's not a big brand name, but I really like my X530 Mitternacht from XFountainpens.com. It writes perfectly, looks great and it is the size of a MB149!!! I really like mine. Good Luck with your choice.

I like the style of my modern Aurora 88; it's a nice black-and-gold pen that has its own look, rather than being a Montblanc lookalike like a number of other pens in that category (not that I have anything against Montblancs - I have a 146 too - I'm just not a big fan of derivative styling).

Another distinctive one is the Delta Via Veneto, which has a pretty classy vintage-esque style to it. I've got one of the doué variants, which has a sterling silver cap and torsion guilloché.

A black Nakaya would be pretty darn classy, too.

No one's mentioned the Monteverde Invincia Stealth yet? It's a lower-cost pen, sure, but it's black -- almost 100 percent black, right down to the nib. How much blacker could it be? In the words of Nifgel Tufnel, "None more black."

I have a Platinum Stealth pen that is ALL black. Even the lettering is simply embossed rather than colored, so I can claim that it is more black than the Monteverde, which has gold lettering on it, even though it is small. The Only non-black spot on my Platinum is on the tipping where use has worn the black finish off the sweet spot where the pen meets the paper. But I won't claim that it's classy, I still like my Waterman Opera as a classy black pen.

Anything that's mostly black, has smooth lines, minimal bling, and silver/chrome/palladium trim.

Sheaffer Valor is probably the classiest pen to come from Sheaffer. They've had some impressive pens, but I think 'classy' has a pretty specific set of criteria.

Oh, black modern Conway Stewarts are classy... even (*gasp*) the ones with gold clips.

Vintage pens = nono. They just scream 'vintage' more than anything else.
