Mead Five Star

I don't know a lot about paper ... what's "good", what's not, but when my fountain pens play so nicely with the paper in a notebook I find, I want to share.

I needed a small notebook that was inexpensive, so i went to Wal-Mart. Found a Mead Five Star spiral notebook, 100 pages, college ruled with 2 pockets for just under $2.00. It was the size I wanted, 7 x 5 in, so out of curiosity, I whipped out my fountain pen and wrote a short sentence. Wow ... smooth! Price was great, my fountain pen liked it, so I bought 2. When I came home, I tried the other 5 pens in my rotation ... Phileas, Conklin, Cum Laude, Lamy Safari, Wality 52 and a Monteverde to see what they thought of this notebook. Everyone got along beautifully!!! Writing was very smooth, no feathering, no bleed through ... great paper! Think I'll go back tomorrow and buy the rest of what they have. LOL

So, if you're looking for a very inexpensive small spiral notebook ... check your Wal-Mart for a Mead Five Star.

LOL, I needed a notebook for some notes on a book I'm reading and I found a Mead 5-subject notebook sitting on my bookshelf, untouched. What the hell, I thought, might as well use it. I've been using a broad italic nib stub Esterbrook with Noodler's Cayenne (a very well-behaved ink on almost everything I've used it on) and a medium-ish nibbed Hero 616 with Baystate Blue and it has been great! Minimal feathering and drying time is better than fancy papers. The showthrough on the BSB is a little much, so I just use one side of the paper, but at a fraction of the cost of nicer papered notebooks, who cares?

Steve. Just plain ol' Steve.

Yes .. the Five Star notebooks and my pens are getting along wonderfully! I don't have BSB, but every ink I've used so far, it's been great and just can't beat the price! No, it's not fancy paper, but for me, it works out just perfectly and I really enjoy the small notebook. I did go back to WM and bought all they had.

Interesting! I have a Mead Five Star lying around somewhere, but I assumed that it wouldn't take FP ink very well. Will have to find it and give it a try!
