Double Reservoir Power Filler In Which Visconti Pens?

tenney

Recommended Posts

At one of the SF Pen Posse's someone showed a Visconti with a double reservoir power filler that's mighty intriguing. Then someone posted about their recent purchase of a Visconti Homo Sapiens pen which I believe does have a double reservoir power filler.

Which Visconti pens have the double reservoir power filler? Or if almost all of them do, then which ones do not?

Thanks

The Homo Sapien uses a 'high vacuum power filler' which kinda like a single reservoir version of the double reservoir. The double reservoir filler is found mainly on the limited edition pens. You can go to the Visconti site and see which pens uses the double reservoir. The legacy LE pens are in their museum section.

I'd be wary of this filling system - I have the Wall Street LE, and while it is beautiful, it is difficult to flush, clean out, and get rid of all the water inside. In fact, after discovering some dried ink inside the ink window of mine, I will probably have to send it in to have it cleaned. All in all, the simple to access piston on Pelikans/TWSBI now seem much more clever.

Where does one find correct cleaning method instructions?

An excellent question - if I knew that, I wouldn't be in the mess I am at the moment!

The Opera Master Demos have the double reservoir power filler, and I've been very happy with them. Great ink capacity, and no problem cleaning them.

They require multiple flushings, but not that much more than my other large pens. As for getting rid of the water, I put the pens nib down in a tall glass that has a paper towel in it. If it sits there overnight, the water wicks out by morning. If I can't wait that long, I (carefully) shake the water into the first reservoir and then use paper towels around the nib to wick the water out. Hope this helps. :happyberet:

That's part of it. As I mentioned already orangezorki, the main trick when flushing/cleaning is to leave the plunger knob unscrewed so the cut-off valve remains open. That way water can pass freely between the large and small reservoirs. Another trick to getting fuller fills be it for ink or water is to use Visconti's traveling ink pot.

That said, I find them a pain to flush and bit of a nuisance to use. The small reservoir is small -- converter size -- and when it runs out you need to tinker with the knob. Alternatively you can leave the cut-off valve open for extended sessions, still you're fiddling with the knob before and thereafter before you put the pen away. I like to fill a pen and be done with it until it's empty.

Still, the double-reservoir works fine for what it was intended, i.e. to prevent burping with such a large reservoir, as well as allowing an empty reservoir in contact with the feed for rough transport, travel on airplanes, etc. If I needed to travel a lot, it's probably the pen I'd opt for fiddling aside.

You can go to the Visconti site and see which pens uses the double reservoir.

I did that before starting this thread, and the only way to tell is to go to each pen they offer and see if it has the Double Reservoir Power Filler. I was trying to ask if y'all just knew which ones did or didn't have it, to avoid my having to look at each and every pen they sell or every sold (if I'm looking over an ebay for a pen that's not in the Visconti current lineup). i.e. If it's just the LE pens, then that's a help.

Plus, the entire Visconti site is all flash making it a royal PITA to use or find things. When the flash even works correctly (e.g. for me, I can't even view their LE page because it won't display correctly).

I just tried looking up the Opera Master Demo on the Visconti site and only find Opera Elements and Opera listed... neither is "master" or "demo" and neither lists a double reservoir.

You need to look at the "Limited Edition" pens. The double-reservoir basically was only put on the Limited Edition (and commissioned) pens. (For clarity, that doesn't mean that all limited edition Viscontis have the double-reservoir.)

BTW, you might ask to have this moved to the Italian forum, where you'll probably get more response to your query.

Yes, the Alhambra LE has this filling system. I like it. It holds a ton of ink!

Personally I love the double reservoir high vac double muckety muck filler system. The hold a ton of ink and are very successful, at least for me. Face it, ALL FILLER SYSTEMS ARE GIMICKS. If we were true nib lovers we would dip. While I enjoy using all my lever and crescent fillers they do not hold enough ink for me to really use them. Out of the 30-40 Viscontis and ConklinsI have with this filler I have only had one failure. The ink capacity, especially when used with the VTIP, aka "ink thingie", is only rivaled by large ED pens.

Guess that I am not that OCD about the cleanup. I will empty, fill once or twice with clean water and empty as best I can by plunging once or twice. I do not try to get every drop of water out. Last I looked ink is a water based product and the double reservoir system holds enough ink that a drop of water residual is trivial.

Like everything else with this obscession, pick you poision and buy/use what you enjoy not what your neighbor loves.

BTW, the Wall Street LE's are amazing pens. My blue one is the only filler failure that I have had.

I like my Gehas with it's San Marco sized 'reserve tank'.

Gets you two more pages.

yep, 400NN in a thinner smaller pen...medium large, holds more ink than the Large 800 and the over sized 1000.

It's reserve tank is, it just holds more. :happyberet:

Thanks for the fascinating information about Gehas and Pelikans, Bo Bo Olson, but I believe OP was interested specifically in Visconti pens.

Back on topic, I *believe* all varieties of the "Ripple" are Double Reserve Power Filler, but I can only personally vouch for the "Carbon Dream" variety.

Thanks for the fascinating information about Gehas and Pelikans, Bo Bo Olson, but I believe OP was interested specifically in Visconti pens.

As the OP, I was initially asking about the Visconti pens because I thought that they were the only semi-affordable pens with a way to pull the ink out into a second reservoir and block that so that ink wouldn't leak out of the nib while flying. It's not so much about a large reservoir as it is about the ability to turn the flow to the nib off. Now, if there are other pens with something like that, then I'm also interested in finding out about them. In searching for the 400NN Gehas, that seems to be a 1950's vintage pen... yes?

The problem I was (and still am) having is that (1) I can't even display Visconti's flash based limited edition page correctly on my browser to find current model LE pens to see if one does have the Double Reservoir Power Filler , and (2) Visconti doesn't seem to have a list of "here are the pens with the Double Reservoir Power Filler", and I can't find such a list anywhere. If such a list existed, that would be the simplest / most direct solution to my query. Complicating it more is that Visconti's site doesn't seem to have that detail of information on "last year's, or older" models.

I'm seeking this info as I look on ebay and some sellers don't state whether the Double Reservoir Power Filler is used on the Visconti LE pen they're selling or not. For example, one Opera Master LE on ebay right now reads "the Opera Master features a power filler system". Since Visconti's web site under "technique" doesn't even list Double Reserve Power Filler, but instead "High vacuum power filler" I'm even more confused to guess if the Opera Master LE has the Double Reserve Power Filler. i.e. is "Double Reserve Power Filler" the same as "High vacuum power filler".

Thanks

Under "Technique" the double reservoir power filler is listed under "Use and Maintenance", and on the right upper part of the page there's a list of pens that have this filling system, although the list is incomplete.
