Kokuyo Systemic Cover Notebook

I had quite an interesting find today.

My original intent was to search for the Midori Traveler's Notebook and have a good look at it. I am quite sure the leather's lovely, it's the limited availability of the refills locally that bothers me - what if I ran out of paper?! :bawl:

Instead, I chanced upon this "notebook system", produced by the same Japanese company that gave us the lovely Campus notebooks - Kokuyo.

This "notebook system" looks quite similar to the Midori Traveler's notebook: it's possible to slot in 2 notebook refills, it has 2 string-type bookmarks, elastic band etc.

Now for the differences: it's made of a canvas-like material instead of leather and, this is the selling point for me, it can take any A6 notebook! No more worrying of refills! There's even a pocket in front for slotting in one or two pens (that's my Lamy Accent Brilliant in there).

I also bought an A6 Campus notebook just in case I get really prolific. :happyberet:

Enjoy the photos!

I like the duality of the cover, notebook on one side, sketchbook on the other! A divided pen holder would be nice. Thank you for sharing!

Maido is a stationary store south of San Francisco. They carry Midori supplies. I've ordered on line and got them in a couple of days. Usual disclaimers apply. Where did you find the Kokuyp System? Jim

@Sketchy: No worries, I was excited about my new purchase and posted the pictures up straight after I got home. Having a divided pen holder would be nice, but I was thinking I could also use the front (and back) pen holder pockets for miscellaneous scraps like receipts etc.

@jimhughes: I stay in Singapore, so I got them off the Page One bookstore here. I have Googled around and it seemed that the most likely place for me to get Midori supplies is Kinokuniya but I didn't see them when I visited the store a month ago; that got me thinking about refills and long-term practicality of using a Midori. :hmm1:

Do these work with the 80-page Campus High Grade (MIO) notebooks Kokuyo makes?

As for where to get them in the States, Jetpens.com has them in various sizes and colors.

Steve. Just plain ol' Steve.

The Kokuyo Systemic Cover Notebook is really quite a very nice design, with great paper quality.

However I find there are a few problems in it compared to the Midori Traveller Notebook.

- The elastic closure is not replaceable.

- The notebook is secured to the book by plastic slots (which may wear out)

- The notebook is quite expensive.

On the other hand, I really like these features:

- Cover pen/paper slots.

@CedricT If you like to find the Midori Traveller Notebook, try Kinokuniya Takashimaya's

stationery section or NBC at Raffles City basement. Both of these carry quite a range of

Traveller Notebook and accessories from the original pen clip to replacement elastic bands

and of course refills as well as refill sorting (binder) accessories! The Traveller is also found

in the small "Passport" versions, as well as the notebook versions!

@Chiro75: I haven't seen a Campus High Grade (MIO) notebook before, but as long as it's A5 size, it will fit.

@nicholasyeo: Thanks! I didn't see it at Kinokuniya Takashimaya, I will take a look at NBC Raffles City then. Darn, it seems that my work is not yet done. :ltcapd: I think the Midori will stand up to wear and tear better too, not to mention that leather ages beautifully. How much does a refill for the Midori cost? The refills for the Kokuyo Systemic Cover Notebook isn't expensive, it takes any A5 notebook and it's S$3 for a Campus one.

Kinokuniya sells them at the stationery section cabinets. You need to ask for assistance.

There are bits and pieces of refill packs below the cabinet, and quite incomplete. I got

mine from Raffles City, and I think refills cost about 6+ dollars. Members get 20% off....

I refer to the larger sized Traveler Notebook cover... Not the passport sized one.

True, the Midori refills can be slightly more expensive. I think that they are still worth it

though. The leather cover is quite a steal. I am going to get more right away!!!! Can't

seem to find any bleedthrough at all on the Midori paper. If only they made pads....

If you're looking for a FP Friendly Pad, look to the web site Until Utopia. He's Singapore based and markets his pads locally there.

Thanks for jetpens liknk on Notebook and cover, Jim

If you want to order online, Jetpens.com carries these.

Typo earlier: my Systemic Notebook takes A6, not A5 although there is an A5 version.

Does this notebook cover seem like it could take a fair amount of abuse? I'm after a refillable system I can use as a tennis notebook, but it needs to be able to withstand travel to/from tournaments, getting smashed at the bottom of a tennis bag, possibly having water spilled on it, and that sort of thing. I had my eye on this cover because I really like the Kokuyo A5s with MIO paper and think they would work for what I have in mind, but I've been hesitant to get it because of the price and worrying that I would destroy it too quickly.

@mooshisho: Yeah they are a little expensive but still cheaper compared with the Midori Traveler's Notebook.

@Solstice: Good question, frankly I don't think it can take that kind of abuse in a sports bag: the cover's not as supple as a leather cover. If you want it to withstand crushing or getting wet, I think you're better off with either the Midori or some other leather cover.

I think you can have a look at Rickshaw's Moleskine Folio if you like a very durable product that is tossed in the tennis bag. It even comes in waterproof materials and is AMERICAN MADE!!!!

I just bought an A5 Campus Systemic last week at Page One at Vivo City - they have the A4 and A5. Nice range of stationery there although not particularly cheap.
