What is the best OVERSIZE pen ?

I only own two over-sized pens, the MB149 and the Pelikan 1000. I guess you can consider other pens as oversized like the H. Sapiens, the Pelikan 800, the Custom 823 by Pilot, but the best over-sized pen I personally own is the Pelikan 1000. Extremely smooth and wet, and noticeably larger than the MB149 (though the 149 is wider). I feel the 149 is too delicate, but I love that pen a lot too. The homo sapiens is much too heavy for any serious use for me. The 800 was my pen of choice for a long while until I finally washed it out and put it away, intending to limit my pens in rotation to regular or mid-sized pens. The Custom 823 is more in rank with the M800, and I like it better than the 800 in performance.

I no longer own any fountain pens... Now they own me.

My oversize pen. Kim & Co. Jumbo ebonite ED next to what I think is my TWSBI 530 and a Sheaffer Nononsense. "Best" is going to be too subjective obviously and it will also depend on what you have experience on. So, this is the biggest pen I have personal experience with.

I have had a few oversized pens now and my favorite and the one I still own is the classic 149. It is light enough for long writing periods and even though I have small hands I personally find it's girth to be the most comfortable of all my pens. I know this may sound a silly statement but it "looks" like a proper fountain pen as well!

All the best.

Ian

One of my several 149s or YOL Grands are among my favorite big pens. I also love the following M1000ED custom pen:

Yes, I agree with many of the suggestions put forward here:

- Montblanc 149 (AKA the Big Black (bleep));

- Delta Dolce Vita Oversize (eyedropper! Lot of ink in there);

- Yard-O-Led Retro Grand (the only Y-O-L I own: I think the Viceroy Grand is even more extravagant).

Absolutely agree with the recommendation for Indian pens, but I'd add the Varuna Gajendra - one gorgeous pen, lovely ebonite, comes with a German nib, beautiful polish... and an awful lot of pen for the price.

What no love for our East Indian friends? How about a Guider Jumbo or a Ratnamson Supreme. Big pen, lots of ink, easy on the wallet to purchase. If your wallet is fatter than mine how about a Parker Giant or a Chris Thompson

Replica of a Parker Giant? YMMV, Jim

Too many pens, too little time!

Some of those Delta Oversize are absolutely gorgeous, but they also cost more than my car.

I agree! Not all are 'clutch your chest' expensive, though. A little careful shopping and/or a quick visit to Bryant's website (link) can turn up many OS Deltas, some of them LEs, at very reasonable prices. I love 'em. I have six of the large Deltas (five button fillers and one piston filler) and they are all hall-of-fame writers.

ETA: Oh, and I love my MB149, too! My Pelikan M1000, not so much. It's OK, but it's too wet with anything but iron gall ink.

I'd add the Montegrappa Extra 1930. The grip is wider than the one on the Waterman Edson and the nib is large too. It isn't that much bigger in total width and length compared to the Edson though. Weight is nice too. It looks like a normal pen but when you hold it, it feels like an oversized one.

Just picking one, right off the top of my head... the MB 149.

I could sit here and make lists of all the OS pens I like/worship/respect, and which could each make a justified run at the title "best OS", but... The 149 just IS.

I'm using a Delta Dolce Vita and wow, is that a comfortable pen to work with! My other suggestion is an Aurora 88, another "flagship pen." Even more a favorite than the Dolce Vita.

Danitrio Cum Laude. A lot of pen for your money. Here is mine next to a MB149.

I'd pick the Pelikan M1000. People always post good stories about warranty service from Pelikan, and the flexy nib is interesting.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm a newbie collector, and I can't understand this bias a lot of collectors have for LARGE pens. This isn't Freudian, is it? :rolleyes:

I like the smaller pens because they tend to be cheaper, look just as nice and write just as well.

That's just a first impression.

I tend to find wider sectioned pens less tiring to use and allowing better control, although I have quite a few smaller pens I really love as well. Not too long ago I did a review of some of the wider bodied pens including Montblanc, Pelikan, Omas, ST Dupont and Sheaffer.

Somewhat surprisingly the Sheaffer PFM (and modern Legacy, Legacy2 and Legacy Heritage), a design that appeared in the late 50s, was among the most comfortable to use over an extended period, had the shortest length when capped and really compared very favorably with all the others.
